The Environment Generalist Technical Supervisor will work closely with the Department Technical Lead and Head of Department who will provide support and also ensure their tasks, methodology and priorities are in line with the department's roadmap and future projects. They will also reach out to colleagues within other departments to ensure their tools can support current and future scenes and assets from upstream departments and the assets and environments produced match downstream department specifications. They would do this with technical support and advice from ATDs, PipeTDs and Developers and act as a bridge between artists and the Production Technology department while contributing to relevant working and steering groups.

Development of any tools should consider the usability, interactivity and flexibility required for artists to quickly address our client's creative requests along with the need for optimized memory and disk usage and compatibility with the multiple DCCs we use at Dneg. Additional responsibilities may include helping to standardize workflows, pipelines and other tools artists use outside of Houdini e.g. Maya, Clarisse, Substance etc.


  • Developing and supporting consistent cross-department workflows and processes.
  • Design and development of standardized department workflows and processes for different types of work.
  • Ensuring the right tools, technology and workflows are in place to deliver the highest quality work in an efficient manner.
  • Providing technical leadership, support and feedback for all Department Supervisors and Artists.
  • Collaborate with software development teams on the specification, testing, and roll-out of new technology.
  • Represent the needs of the department in cross-department pipeline and R&D planning conversations.
  • Oversee artists' work when they are assigned to department development tasks.
  • Planning and delivering training to ensure artists are prepared for upcoming work.
  • Accountable for maintaining department documentation for internal tools.
  • Delivering tools and workflows on schedule by efficiently managing their own tasks, development teams and cross-department communication.
  • Help to deliver the output of the department to the required technical quality standards.
  • Implementing strategies to improve operational efficiency on an ongoing basis.
  • Understand the needs of downstream departments and communicate requirements to upstream departments.

  • Thorough knowledge of developing Houdini Digital Assets that fit within larger systems. These HDAs should be scalable, artist-friendly, and well documented.
  • Experience in developing systems to procedurally create and populate dynamic assets for landscapes and world-building.
  • Able to work comfortably with VEX and Python (HOM) to add logic and capabilities beyond that available in pre-existing toolsets.
  • Experience identifying and driving memory and storage performance goals and optimizations to ensure the content fits within the limits of offline rendering resources.
  • Experience and understanding of using DCC packages for photorealistic film quality VFX.
  • Ability to proactively use knowledge and experience to identify and solve problems before they affect artists in the department.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities and handle change.

Nice to Have
  • Experience using Maya, Substance suite, Isotropix Clarisse.
  • Working knowledge of PBR workflows and asset model/texture/look development.
  • Working knowledge of the new Houdini contexts LOPS & TOPs.
  • Experience with the Pixar USD APIs
  • Comfortable working in an IDE and debugging.
