Collections Assistant - Earth Sciences

Science Denver, Colorado

Description

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science seeks a Collections Assistant in the Integrative Collections Branch to support the Earth Sciences’ Geology collections (Minerals, Rocks, Meteorites, and Micromounts). This is an opportunity to be part of the museum’s efforts to create a new mineral and gem exhibit hall, which will include a closure and deconstruction of our existing mineral and gem exhibit followed by construction and installation of the new geology exhibits. This Assistant will support efforts to deinstall, clean, repair, rehouse, and track physical location (via barcoding) of all geological specimens being removed from the exhibit and those specimens returning to the new exhibit.  The Assistant will also work to accession, catalog and house new specimens donated or purchased for the new exhibit.  In addition to deinstallation and reinstallation, this position serves to integrate specimens coming off exhibits into the collections, while updating all relevant data within our CMS system, KE Emu.

This position will largely support the Geology collections but may also support work on the other Earth Science collections (fossils) that may be impacted by the overall progression of this exhibit project.

This position is a two+ year term to end in July 2027. This position will work closely with the Earth Sciences Collections Manager and Assistant Collections Managers, the Curator of Geology, and Gems & Minerals Exhibit Team as necessary.

As part of an outwardly focused and collaborative museum team, this position may support some outreach, service, and research activities as related to the mentioned exhibit and collections. The DMNS is especially interested in candidates whose background and experience have prepared them to contribute to our commitments to co-create a museum-wide DEAI strategy, and to find ways for culturally diverse communities to engage with the Museum in meaningful ways.
