Description:

The Accounting Manager plays a key role in supporting the mission of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, where science, curiosity, and community come together. This role leads the accounting team and operations that keep the Museum and its Foundation running smoothly behind the scenes, ensuring financial integrity while enabling unforgettable guest experiences, groundbreaking research, and inspiring exhibits.
From stewarding resources that support everything from dinosaur halls to space exhibitions, to building strong financial systems and teams, the Accounting Manager helps power the work that brings science to life for millions of visitors each year.

Essential duties:

  • Oversee all accounting operations for the Museum and Foundation, including general ledger, payables/receivables, cash management, and reconciliations.
  • Lead the full financial close and reporting cycle (monthly, quarterly, annual), ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with GAAP.
  • Prepare and present financial statements and analysis for internal leadership, Board reporting, and external stakeholders.
  • Partner cross-functionally to support budgeting, forecasting, and decision-making, including variance analysis across programs, exhibits, research, and operations.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulatory requirements, audits, and required filings (including Form 990).
  • Lead and develop the accounting team while driving process and systems improvements, enhancing efficiency, reporting capabilities, and scalability.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a complex or nonprofit environment.
  • 2+ years of experience supervising or leading professional staff.
  • Experience working with integrated financial systems/ERP platforms.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Ideal candidate will:

  • Be passionate about working in a mission-driven, educational environment.
  • Have a strong attention to detail while also seeing the big picture.
  • Be a proactive problem-solver who improves processes, not just maintains them.
  • Communicate financial information clearly to both finance and non-finance audiences.
  • Enjoy collaborating across teams—from scientists to operations staff to leadership.
  • Lead with a hands-on, supportive management style and a commitment to team development.
  • Bring curiosity, adaptability, and a sense of ownership to their work.

Join a team where your work supports more than just numbers—it supports discovery, learning, and wonder every single day.
