POSITION SUMMARY:
The primary purpose of the Cancer Registrar, under the direction of the Tumor Registry Manager, conducts cancer data collection, quality control and medical data correction activities for Cancer/Tumor Registry; assists in setting priorities, deadlines and schedules in accordance with overall Cancer/Tumor Registry Program goals.
POSITION EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school graduate / GED certificate or equivalent preferred
- HIM Associates preferred
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification preferred
- Strong computer skills required with knowledge of Microsoft Office suite; Excel, Word, PowerPoint
- Good written and verbal communication skills required
- Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills
- Strong attention to detail
JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:
- 1 year of Cancer Registry experience preferred
- 1-2 years of medical records experience in release of information or auditing is preferred
- Knowledge of cancer registry software is preferred
- Good working knowledge in use of an electronic health record
- Knowledge in the methods involved in collecting and analyzing health data
- Knowledge in medical terminology, indexes and classification systems
- Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State and local regulations concerning data usage and release (i.e. HIPAA, HITECH, etc.)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Trains Cancer Registry Clerk and Cancer HIM Analyst on cancer registry operations and regulations
- Uses online database to merge reports from EMR systems
- Examines medical and pathology records to determine patient eligibility for cancer registry
- Completes abstracts for Non-Analytical cases
- Abstraction of medical records, translating the medical terminology into standardized codes that record: demographic data, disease data, treatment data and follow up of patients diagnosis
- Obtains and records information relating to all first course of treatment given to patients at any institution
- Determines analytical and non-analytical cases for submission to Texas Department of Health and Cancer Registry
- Compiles and reports data from all DHR sources that treat patients
- Performs clinical analysis of the medical record to determine accurate assignment of site, stage, and other codes for completion of abstraction
- Interacts with physicians, administration, and other departments for conference preparation and committee work
- Performs research from appropriate data collection manuals to determine if cancer is reportable
- Attends webinars as assigned
- Assesses data validity through comparative analysis with national databases
- Determines analytical and non-analytical cases for submission to Texas Department of Health (TDH), Texas Cancer Registry (TCR)
