Schedule: Non-rotational, preferred/ Rotational may be considered

Position Summary:

The Hydro Vac Operator reports to the Operator Foreman and is responsible for the successful completion of hydro excavation processes. The incumbent operates Hydro Vac and other machines used in construction to excavate, load, dig or break rocks or debris, dirt, or other materials. The Hydro-Vac Operator acts as crew lead, responsible for the completion of projects in a safe and timely manner.  

Essential Job Functions:

  • Operates Hydro-Vac and equipment in a safe and professional manner
  • Competently operates Hydro-Vac to and from job sites
  • Excavates with combination of pressure washer wand, 6" and 8" dig tube and 4" suction line
  • Follows specifications for the job and company policies
  • Supervises activities of Hydro-Vac Laborers assigned to assist with excavation 
  • Provides leadership and task delegation to the Hydro-Vac Laborers through coaching and mentoring to ensure employee skill development 
  • Ensures all equipment and components are in good working condition at all times
  • Properly maintain Hydro-Vac equpiment 
  • Use proper PPE at all times and follows all Hydro-Vac procedures

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma, or Equivalent
  • Valid Class A Commercial Drivers License with Air-brake endorsement and clean driving record
  • Experience with basic maintenance and repairs of equipment of hydro-vac

Required Education, Training and Certificates:

  • OHSA 10 Certificate or ability to obtain upon hire
  • H2S Certificate or ability to obtain upon hire
  • Attends training sessions, seminars and appropriate educational classes required by department 
  • Computer skills commensurate with program and job applications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of pressure washers, pumps, pressure valves, etc. 
  • Knowledge of basic underground utilities 
  • Knowledge of proper equipment use conducive to weather conditions (heat, cold and wind) and assignment 
  • Knowledge of Hazardous Materials and Safety Regulations and industry practices related to equipment use and operation
  • Skills in operating heavy equipment and machines proficiently and safely 
  • Skills in daily maintenance of machines including repairs and inspecting equipment to identify possible problems
  • Skills in use of Computer/Laptop or other supporting devices commensurate with program and job applications 
  • Ability to use time and equipment efficiently in order to complete projects on time
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a team environment 
  • Ability to handle stress and possess positive trait even in difficult or challenging situations

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and may require use of ear plugs. Work is done outside at a client facility or job site that may have inclement weather conditions. Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work. The employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts, vehicles and equipment.
