Position Overview: The primary role of the Proofreader/Copy Editor is to provide internal proofreading and quality checks of various materials, including, but not limited to, TV and radio scripts; magazine and newspaper print ads; out-of-home boards; brochures; miscellaneous collateral items; online banner ads; microsites; and presentation materials.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Handle large volumes of work; be flexible in working with diverse clients and agency staff or partners while maintaining an upbeat approach as a motivational, stress-free team player
  • Proofread and copyedit all advertising materials and use standard, industry-wide symbols to note edits required or errors found
  • Attend press approvals for brochures and other multipage
  • Check press sheets for content, color breaks, and any last-minute changes
  • Check files to make sure of the following:
    • Text matches the original
    • Spelling is correct and style is consistent or follows logically defined rules
    • Page numbers, headings, and captions are correct
    • Footnote/endnote numbering corresponds from body copy to legal
    • Photos and illustrations are correctly captioned
    • Closely partner with copywriters, account teams, and project managers to route materials and meet project deadlinesAssist lead creative and account teams in developing voice, tone, and style guidelines, if requestedAssist in developing departmental and agency processes and procedures, where applicable                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                
  QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or related field
  • Five years of related work experience
  • Scrupulous approach to detailed work
  • Careful eye for catching grammatical, typographical, or compositional errors and incorrect word usage
  • Ability to review content, fact-check information, and raise flags about questionable or inconsistent information

  • Strong oral and written communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills
  • Thrive in high-volume, deadline-driven environment, while working independently
  • Ability to adapt to fluctuating project demands, including rush requests, and manage multiple projects/deadlines at once
  • Familiarity with production process helpful
  • Familiarity with automotive, gaming, QSR, hospitality, and entertainment industries helpful
  • Ability to take directions and feedback
  • Accept working occasional nights and weekends as needed

 

  COMPETENCIES/SKILLS:

  • Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat Pro; Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Keynote; and Outlook or Entourage
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite 6 helpful
  • Working knowledge of Mac applications
  • High level of skill in written English, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus, but not required

Must successfully pass a proofreading and copy-editing test.
