SUMMARY: 
This position will be located on site at a client’s industrial production facility and is specific to construction safety. The Safety Specialist is ultimately responsible for monitoring and executing an effective, safe workplace in compliance of safety, health, and the environment. This position directs the resources and activities of the organization to support the Health and Safety programs by providing advice and guidance to project staff which includes Project Directors, Sr. Construction Managers, Construction Managers, and Construction Engineers. This position has a significant influence on the company’s overall performance in the areas of construction site Health and Safety. The primary goal is to continually maintain an appropriate level of awareness, knowledge, and preparedness across the organization to create a culture that prioritizes effective safety protocol. 
 
This position will provide overall leadership, professional knowledge and expertise in the administration and support of Health and Safety processes to include regulatory agency compliance, company policies and human capital development.
This position reports to the Safety Manager for administrative purposes, but closely collaborates with the safety team, Construction Engineers, Construction Managers, Senior CMs, client safety, and client operations representatives to coordinate program efforts and outcomes. The position is 100% onsite. A successful candidate will understand the challenges and priorities of executing construction at a client’s operational industrial facility.
The team needs someone who’s not just great at safety but also a strong cultural fit. This person should thrive in an industrial or pharmaceutical environment, be adaptable, and have the right mix of technical expertise and people skills to keep safety a top priority while building great relationships with the client and our trade partners. Building strong relationships with the client, trade partners, and teammates is crucial to success in this role. 
This is a full time FLSA non-exempt position.  The position requires 40 work hours per week with the ability to work more if necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:  
  • Program Management (50%)
    • Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state and local legislation and codes governing construction site environmental health and safety
    • Enforces policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and guidelines
    • Interfaces with regulatory agencies, staff members, trade contractors and key client personnel (as applicable) to formulate corrective actions
    • Ensures personnel training and corrective action follow-up is completed.
    • Performs or reviews accident investigation, data analysis, and recurrence prevention programs and procedures
    • Provides feedback for the continuous development of Safety Policies and Procedures as well as effective implementation of these policies.
    • Works with CM’s and CE’s to positively encourage their development and support implementation of their ideas
    • Facilitates and arbitrates between CM/CE’s and trades on issues involving safety and the correction of unsafe conditions
    • Holds CM/CE’s accountable on safety and corporate safety programs and goals
    • Utilizes behavioral based safety (BBS) practices
  • Training and Development (10%)
    • Attends conferences, meetings, and workshops to keep up to date on new safety methods and procedures applicable to codes and regulations or to maintain required level of certification and continuous education
    • Studies and prepares to take safety certification exam – STSC, CHST, ASP, etc. (It is expected that you will complete the STSC exam in first year of employment, then prepare to take the next level exam following.)
    • Tracks and schedules required safety trainings or certification renewals
    • Provides one-on-one training on specific safety subjects
    • Schedules consultative educational training sessions with OSHA and field staff
  • Safety Audits (30%)
    • Responds and helps all emergency situations
    • Develops accident investigation reports to track and prevent recurrence of incidents and to ensure information on incidents is shared adequately across the organization.
    • Manages the process for post-incident investigations and lessons learned
    • Conducts (or coordinates through other field staff) on-site reviews and audits of safety protocol at all jobsites.
    • Ensures site safety through review of procedure documents, and contractor’s safety manuals.
    • Immediately addresses critical safety concerns arising in the field working with all parties involved to determine a corrective plan of action.
    • Performs site safety audits using inspection checklists and photos to provide a comprehensive report to field personnel
    • Ensures abidance to owner safety rules and regulations
    • Intervenes to understand behaviors and determine a corrective action plan with employees whose work habits require correction
  • Reporting (10%)
    • Reports all accidents for proper recordkeeping and reports to proper agencies (OSHA 300a logs etc.)
    • Reports and tracks all OSHA visits and citations.  Follow up on corrective actions and report back to OSHA
    • Reports all safety violations to onsite project managers, directors and subcontractors following onsite safety visits
    • Reports, schedules and tracks safety trainings and certifications for all staff
    • Orders, tracks and distributes safety supplies
    • Reviews, provides feedback and uploads weekly housekeeping photos to company intranet or client project software 
    • Updates client databases with current safety metrics and data required
    • Assists with regular written reports, metrics, KPIs, etc. as well as other production-related results and updates to the Safety Director
Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Safety, Construction Management, Project Management or Engineering or military equivalency.
  • Preferred: 5-10 years of practical field experience or military equivalent. Willing to consider a strong cultural fit with less experience.
  • Microsoft Office Suite of products (Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • OSHA 30, or STSC, or CHST certifications.
  • Procore knowledge or ability to learn is a must.
  • Must be highly motivated and possess excellent interpersonal communication skills, including incident report writing and reporting of safety metrics.
  • Must be able to travel and willing to work occasional weekends if needed.
  • Ability to work in an effective safe manner with little supervision.
  • Familiarity with industrial hygiene is a plus. Willingness to learn IH topics is a must.
