Position Summary

Crystal Dynamics is looking for a Level Designer who is eager to showcase demonstrable on-screen progress from concept to ship. As a Level designer, you report into the Lead Designer and work with their respective strike team to plan, layout, and build levels and combat encounters. Both theory and hands-on work will be a large part of this role. Design responsibilities include, but are not limited to paper map creation, block mesh level creation, level scripting, combat scripting and performance scripting. These responsibilities require a high degree of knowledge and experience using commercial game engines, editors, and level scripting tools.   
 
Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Collaborate with all departments including design to plan and build large scale levels 
  • Work with Leads and Strike teams as well as directors to ensure all aspects of levels are setup and constructed in a thorough and organized manner, adhering to all phases of design including paper map to final iteration and ship 
  • Build spaces that are easy to understand and navigate for players 
  • Adhere to strict scripting guidelines and object creation based on the rest of the projects structure; Learn from seniors/leads on how to maintain best practices and update them as they grow and change 
  • Partner closely with artists to bring levels from early stages all the way to final quality 
  • Coordinate closely with all departments on needs including outsourcing, audio, VFX to sell all moments and encounters in the level and space that is being built 
  • Iterate on design work with all team members to funnel feedback and make positive and demonstrable change on screen 
  • Document all processes and workflow additions or changes per leadership direction 

Competencies, Skills & Knowledge 

  • Clear, analytical thinker, with a proven ability to break down level design into easily buildable chunks and produce a larger working space that is both visually interesting and highly functional 
  • Understanding of current enemy and level constraints as well as an understanding of the game mechanics and player abilities to both challenge and entertain players. 
  • Experience scoping and time estimating various level design tasks as a self-promoter and self-organized force 
  • Clearly and effectively communicate level design ideas, changes, feedback and iteration as well as execute these changes on screen to a high degree of quality 
  • Understand, build and execute level scripting changes and plans as they relate to good story telling and immersive experiences 
  • Understand current industry trends as it relates to modern level design and show examples of this in your levels   
  • Excellent knowledge of current level design theory and principles of what it takes to make a blockbuster triple A level be memorable in the eyes of the player 

Essential Requirements 

  • 2+ years of level design and scripting experience as part of a collaborative development team 
  • Contributed to at least 1 AAA project for current gen consoles in a level design capacity, utilizing a visual scripting and 3D layout toolset 
  • Familiar with commercial game engines and associated with visual scripting tools 

Bonus Skills & Experience 

  • Artistic background for layout and composition of game play visuals 
  • Shipped title from concept to release
