Summary of the Database Administrator – SQL Server  
The primary purpose is to manage and maintain the organization's database systems, with a focus on Microsoft SQL Server, to ensure optimal performance, availability, security, and integrity of the data. Overseeing the design, implementation, and ongoing management of databases, while collaborating with various teams to address data-related needs and challenges. Responsible for ensuring the efficient operation of SQL Server databases, implementing best practices for database management, and proactively identifying and resolving issues that may impact performance or data integrity. Work closely with application developers DevOps, system administrators, and other stakeholders to optimize database configurations, plan for capacity needs, and contribute to disaster recovery strategies.    
  
Responsibilities for the Database Administrator – SQL Server  
  • Install, configure, and maintain SQL Server instances
  • Configure and administer high availability and disaster recovery solutions, such as Always on Availability Groups to ensure business continuity and data availability
  • Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks and areas for improvement, and proactively tune queries and configurations to ensure optimal performance
  • Apply patches and updates to SQL Server instances and other related software, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations
  • Deploy SQL scripts to multiple databases using 3rd party or custom tools
  • Debug and troubleshoot database issues and collaborate with development teams to resolve them. 
  • Automate routine database administration tasks using scripts
  • Regularly refresh lower environments with production database backups
  • Implement and maintain database security policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations
  • Develop and implement backup and restore strategies to protect data against loss or corruption and perform regular backups
  • Plan and execute database migrations to new hardware, software versions, or cloud platforms, and ensure data consistency and integrity during the migration process
  • Develop and maintain database documentation, including procedures, diagrams, and technical specifications, to facilitate knowledge sharing and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Perform daily and operational database tasks
  • Design and implement backup policies
  • Be available for on-call support as needed
  
Qualifications of the Database Administrator – SQL Server   
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent 
  • Certifications in SQL Server 
  • 5+ years of experience
  • Experience in in Always on High Availability solutions and best practices
  • Experience in SQL Server installation and configuration
  • Experience in SQL Server security
  • Experience in database backup, restore and recovery
  • Experience in query tuning and optimization
  • Experience in debugging and troubleshooting database issues
  • Experience in database maintenance tasks such as backups, restores, and recovery
  • Experience in database migration
  • Experience with PowerShell scripting for automating routine tasks. 
  • Experience working with Amazon Web Services 
  • Experience with database migration to AWS 
  • Experience in working with a ticketing system and managing tickets
  
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities of the Database Administrator – SQL Server  
  • Ability to apply patches and updates to SQL Server instances and other related software
  • Knowledge of performance tuning techniques, including query optimization and indexing
  • Ability to implement encryption for sensitive data
  • Strong documentation skills for documenting database architecture, configurations, and processes
  • Ability to provide standby support for critical database issues
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve database issues
  • Understanding of SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
  • Knowledge of T-SQL programming language
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment
  • Working knowledge of MySQL or Aurora MySQL
  • SQL Server database administration experience in a Healthcare or SaaS domain 
  • Familiarity with Splunk, SQL Sentry
