Church Publishing Incorporated (CPI) was founded in 1918 as the Church Hymnal Corporation, a nonprofit affiliate of the Church Pension Group. Today, CPI’s professionals produce about 50 new books and resources each year, and manage a portfolio of more than 2,600 active products, many sold worldwide.

As an integral part of the Marketing and Publishing teams, the Associate Publicist will be responsible for developing and executing publicity campaigns. They will need to be a creative self-starter with a passion for the book publishing industry and a desire to learn, grow, and be successful. This position requires a strong knowledge of social media and current trends in the industry.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Develop and implement effective publicity strategies to secure national and regional coverage across television, radio, podcasts, and in print and online publications.
  • Create compelling and engaging press releases, pitch letters, author Q&As, and press kits.
  • Organize and coordinate author events including bookstore events.
  • Build and maintain relationships with editors, book reviewers, influencers, and other media professionals.
  • Research and develop targeted mailing lists and coordinate book mailings for trade and academic titles.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on publicity campaigns and media coverage, leveraging insights to drive continuous improvement.
  • Stay up to date on current trends in the book publishing industry and in social media.
  • Collaborate with the editorial, marketing, and sales teams to ensure the success of campaigns.
  • Maintain media database and accurate records of all publicity efforts.
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as scheduling meetings, processing invoices, and tracking expenses 
  • Effective performance of the essential functions of this position requires regular in-person, on-site interaction with colleagues, both for purposes of relationship building and meaningful collaboration

  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment is essential.

 EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

  •  3+ years previous administrative/support experience in a fast-paced environment;. Prior Publicity or similar industry internship experience is a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, or a related field is preferred or a combination of education and experience will be considered. Interest in faith based publishing and social justice related topics is a plus.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Commuting to the NY office, on average, three days a week. Extensive use of a computer keyboard is a demand of the position to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.     WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Currently, hybrid work environment, which requires working in CPG’s office Tuesdays through Thursdays and flexibility to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays.     Salary Range: $48,400 - $55,000
