Church Pension Group (CPG) is a financial services organization that serves the Episcopal Church, located in Midtown Manhattan. CPG was founded in 1917 to provide pension benefits to eligible clergy of the Episcopal Church. Since then, its mission has expanded to include life and disability insurance, health benefits, property & casualty insurance, and publishing.

The Director, Lead Data Scientist will help define and build the future of data and analytics within The Church Pension Fund’s Investments department. As a partner to the Chief Investment Officer, asset class leads, and the risk and performance reporting team, the Director will shape how CPF uses data to generate investment insights, evaluate portfolio opportunities and risks, and support decision-making. The role is intended not simply to respond to data requests, but to identify opportunities, develop new approaches, and influence the evolution of CPF’s investment process through data.

CPF oversees approximately $20 billion across a diversified portfolio of public and private investments. CPF partners with a wide range of external investment managers and holds interests in several hundred individual funds, generating a vast array of data ranging from top-level portfolio Net Asset Values to detailed information about individual holdings within venture capital, real estate, public equity, and other funds. CPF’s access to top-tier investment managers generates an unusually high-quality and differentiated data set. CPF is currently creating an internal data warehouse, initially focused on holdings-level data for private funds, with plans to expand the range of information over time. The Director will play a leading role in determining how this platform evolves and in building the processes, analytical capabilities, and visualizations that enable CPF to derive greater value from its investment data.

Along with working closely with members of the Investments department, the Director will partner with Church Pension Group’s data engineering team. The data engineering team will maintain primary responsibility for development work on the data warehouse, with the Director serving as a bridge between Investments and the IT team to translate investment needs into data and technology priorities and solutions. Through these partnerships, the Director will have substantial ownership over the strategic direction and application of CPF’s investment data and analytics capabilities.
