About the Role:
The Application Security team’s mission is to help secure Confluent products and applications so that our customers can trust and leverage Confluent for their most critical workloads, both in the cloud and on premise environments.
Our work ranges from hunting software vulnerabilities, performing security design reviews by working closely with numerous engineering and product stakeholders to help incorporate security very early in the SDLC as well as working on complex threat models to identify, prioritize and mitigate security risks in our products. We also strive to work on impactful engineering projects to help create automation for our static, dynamic security testing and other automation needs.
As an Application Security Intern at Confluent, you will join a team of security architects and engineers responsible for defining and executing on the security strategy of our product for both on-prem and Cloud environments. You will ensure that security is embedded in how we build our products from design and development to testing to how we run them in the cloud, and partner with product and engineering teams to strategically guard against existing or emerging threats.
Tech in Texas! Austin is a Confluent early career engineering hub. Your internship will be a hybrid working model that introduces you to Confluent's culture and enables faster learning, onboarding, and coaching.
- At the time of your start date, you will be required to be located in the location on your offer letter.
- You and your fellow interns will have access to office space to collaborate in person for a required two days a week.
- This internship requires a working, reliable internet connection and a quiet, dedicated workspace. You will be required to work from your Austin-based home location three times per week.
- A $4,000 USD pre-taxed lump sum payment for a housing stipend at the start of your internship.
- A travel reimbursement (if required) for roundtrip airline flights (to and from the location of your internship to your home location) or driving mileage reimbursement.
- If you receive a return offer at the end of the internship, you will be based in Austin, Texas.
What You Will Do:
- Product security reviews to identify vulnerabilities and provide critical security guidance to engineers and product managers
- Triage of known vulnerabilities in open-source dependencies in use across Confluent
- Work on proof of concepts related to cool new research, tools and technology related to the Application security domain, and figure out how to scale these up for production deployment and use
- Test, develop, operate and improve software automation with key stakeholder impact
- You’ll work on best-of-breed open source and proprietary technologies with a passionate engineering team spanning three continents and all the layers of Confluent's technology stack
- Most importantly, we hope you’ll have fun while changing how the world works
What You Will Bring:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Information Security, Computer Science with specialization in Information Security, or a related technical discipline with a graduation date between December 2025 - August 2026
- Passionate about software bug hunting and/or participating in CTFs
- A curious mindset and genuine passion for cybersecurity, especially in the fields of web application and cloud security
- Familiarity in Java, Go Lang, Python or another programming language
- Exceptional problem-solving skills with an eye for detail
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Quick learner with adaptability to new technologies
- A positive attitude and a strong desire to contribute to the team's success
- Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and want to contribute towards complex security automation initiatives

At Confluent, we are committed to providing competitive pay and benefits that are in line with industry standards. This position has a fixed salary of Bachelors $45/hr, Masters $50/hr, and PhD $55/hr and includes a housing stipend.
