Position at CNO Financial Group, Inc.

The VP of Finance & Administration is the lead finance officer for Washington National responsible for the business segment strategic planning process, financial and distribution analysis and reporting, business analysis, financial policy making, collaboration with enterprise finance and actuarial, financial management of Web Benefits Design (WBD), a subsidiary technology company, plus commission hierarchy management and agency support for Performance Matters Associates (PMA), a wholly owned insurance agency.  This position is focused on analysis, linking business strategy and financial performance, establishing and monitoring performance metrics, CBA development on capital investment, and support of business objectives in concert with the business segment and key enterprise leaders.  This position entails working closely with the executive leadership group (ELG), other senior management and senior field leadership.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the annual 5-year strategic planning process including budgeting, sales forecasts, CBAs for major initiatives, and P&L oversight for the business segment, PMA, and WBD.   Work in concert with segment business leaders and others to develop a strategic plan that supports profitable growth, optimizing revenue growth with product profitability and operating expenses
  • Lead the financial analysis and reporting function for the business segment, PMA, and WBD across the Supp Health, Life and Annuity product lines, working closely with Actuarial, Claims, Investment Management, CNO Finance, the business segment, PMA and other enterprise functional areas.  This includes reporting results to internal and external parties – executive management, rating agencies, analysts, etc.  It also includes development and oversight of the agency P&L, including retained commissions, operating expenses, agent commissions, incentives, and debt management.  Lastly, includes P&L reporting for WBD
  • Lead distribution analysis and reporting for the business segment and PMA
  • Lead financial analysis and reporting for the business segment and PMA
  • Lead the PMA Agent Services function including hierarchy management for agent commission and sales reporting, and a “help desk” to address agent questions and provide other support
  • Lead other special projects as they arise, such as: M&A management for business segment, initiatives to enhance product, segment, and agency profitability, and business segment coordination with Audit

Decision Making Authority:

Significant authority with respect to business segment and PMA business planning and reporting for a business that generates in excess of $600 mm annual earned premiums, income in excess of $100 mm, agency earnings in excess of $10 mm, and service company earnings of $6mm.

Direct team of 6

 

Requirements:

  • B.S. Accounting.  MBA & CPA preferred
  • 7 – 10 years experience in accounting and finance roles, preferably with experience in Statutory and GAAP insurance accounting and reporting. 
  • Extensive Excel modeling experience
  • Prior direct people leadership experience
  • Strong oral, written, and analytical skills-orientation
  • Superior teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Strong financial critical thinking and presentation skills, with an ability to influence and communicate effectively with peers, senior management, and external parties
  • Ability to analyze operational results, connect them to financial results, and prepare story to communicate to investors, ratings agencies, and other external parties
  • Ability to think strategically about revenue growth, expense reductions, and operational alternatives to improve business performance
  • Ability to plan and execute to drive business results
  • Preferable prior experience in financial and/or distribution support for an insurance agency, requiring successful interaction with a field force of independent insurance agents
