STUDENT, ACTUARIAL SERVICES

 

CONTRIBUTING TO THE CMPA

Actuarial Services supports the CMPA’s mission and goals through proper valuation of the Association’s liabilities and determination of CMPA’s member fees. This is accomplished through detailed actuarial work following the Standards of Practice set by Canadian Institute of Actuaries. The team develops proprietary applications and data structures, builds actuarial models and processes, supports financial auditing and provides insight for the Association’s funds and liability management.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

We are looking for a dedicated individual who is eager to apply their actuarial or statistical knowledge and skills in a practical setting, tackling real-world problems, and contributing to informed decision-making within the CMPA. Youll be part of a team committed to handling challenging actuarial tasks in the area of medical professional liability, including but not limited to, loss reserving, fee setting, financial projections, scenario and stress testing, and insurance program assessment.

 

This position provides the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a supportive and challenging environment, while providing a platform to significantly contribute to complex actuarial projects.

 

POSITION ACTIVITIES

  • Supports the refinement of year-end valuation documentation, including quality assurance of automation processes using Python
  • Assists in the improvement of data grouping, including quality checks of corresponding files
  • Participates in the review of longstanding open cases and assess their impact on loss reserving and fee setting
  • Contributes to the automation of the loss reserving process using the Loss Development Factor approach and similar methodologies
  • Researches, gathers, and compiles information on the application of advanced techniques such as machine learning and AI
  • Engages in the extraction, verification, and analysis of data
  • Assist in preparing and technically reviewing materials in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Data Science, or an equivalent field of study having completed at least the second year of the program
  • Successful completion of one or more actuarial exams preferred
  • Previous co-op or relevant work experience preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Experience with Python is an asset

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team with technical and non-technical people
  • Attention to detail and strong analytical thinking skills
  • Ability to learn fast on the job and achieve objectives while still learning
  • Sound judgement and the ability to prioritize own work
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Ability to communicate in French is an asset

POSTING DETAILS

  • Job type: Temporary full-time opportunity
  • Rate of pay: is between $22.50 - $32.00 per hour based on level of education and previous relevant work experience
  • Skills assessment: selected candidates may be required to complete a skills assessment
  • Location: Fully Remote Job, working from a home-based office anywhere in the provinces of Ontario and Québec
  • Students are defined as individuals who are enrolled in full-time studies at a post-secondary institution during the year that they are employed. To be considered for a position, candidates must be enrolled in an academic program with a co-op term from September to December 2024.
