CONTRIBUTING TO THE CMPA
The Finance department supports the CMPA’s mission and goals by safeguarding the Association’s assets through accurate and timely recording and stewardship of financial transactions. Providing quality legal services and compensating patients harmed due to medico-legal occurrences to uphold our members’ integrity is central to the CMPA’s mission. Working with both internal and external stakeholders, the Medico-Legal Financial Analysis team provides integrated financial insights and strategies that support the unique objectives and operational requirements of the Association. This team is responsible for strategic financial planning and budgeting and analysis of the Associations two largest expenses: legal costs and compensation to patients.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Manager, Medico-Legal Financial Analysis, plays a pivotal role in supporting the Director of Finance by leading the development of insightful analysis on emerging business trends, strategic planning, financial modeling, and the creation of key financial reports.
As a leader on the Finance team, the role drives strategic decision-making related to medico-legal expenditures by equipping senior leadership with timely, data informed insights. The Manager leads a specialized team that integrates financial and operational data, applies robust internal control principles, and leverages financial systems to deliver actionable intelligence. Their work combines medico-legal expenditure analysis with environmental and industry trends to support informed decision-making.
The incumbent leads the Medico-Legal Financial Analysis function within the Finance Department, proactively identifying financial drivers through the evaluation of emerging issues and trends. With deep expertise in accounting, financial reporting, and analysis, the Manager guides a team of professionals in delivering strategic financial advice, comprehensive reporting, and data-driven recommendations.
POSITION ACTIVITIES
- Manages accounting activities related to medico-legal expenditures, encompassing financial close processes, internal control framework, and accurate financial reporting
- Directs the legal fee budgeting and forecasting efforts, partnering with external stakeholders and senior leaders to support informed decision-making
- Leads support of the external audit of the CMPA medico-legal expenditures, which includes working with the Manager, Financial Planning & Reporting to prepare year-end audit working papers
- Manages the transformation of medico-legal data into actionable insights by leveraging data-driven analysis, financial modelling and cross-functional collaboration
- Develops financial information, reports, and dashboards to support organizational decision-making and satisfy external stakeholder requirements related to medico-legal costs
- Plans, develops, and manages projects related to improving the financial management of medico-legal costs
- Partners with diverse teams across Finance, other departments, and external stakeholders to meet joint corporate reporting requirements and actively engage in medico-legal expenditure discussions, fostering strong cross-functional alignment
- Develops and presents materials to the Senior Leaders, Audit, and Governance committees
- Provides strategic guidance and expert consultation to the Director of Finance, CFO, and senior leadership on financial planning, reporting, internal controls, and policy development, with a focus on medico-legal expenditure management
- Continuously identifies process improvements and oversees corporate and system improvement initiatives
- Provides guidance to direct reports to both support their development and prioritize their efforts in support of corporate objectives

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 4-year university degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or an equivalent field of study
- Accounting designation is required
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive work experience managing finance activities with an emphasis on financial reporting and analysis and financial planning/modelling
- Minimum of 5 years of experience leading and managing a team of finance professionals
- Experience with organizing and delivering informative, thorough, and professional presentations to all audiences
- Ability to communicate complex financial information and concepts to a non-technical audience
- Experience working with senior management, executive decision-makers, and external stakeholders
- Experience with successfully delivering cross-functional projects and change initiatives
- Proven ability to lead and engage a team of professionals, ability to coach, mentor, and motivate staff to achieve organizational and individual goals

POSTING DETAILS
- Job Type: Regular full-time opportunity
- Salary Range: $132,700 to $170,000 – this role is classified as level 11
- Location: Hybrid – Primary Remote Job. You can work from a home-based office the majority of the time within the provinces of Ontario and Québec, with regular on-site presence at the Ottawa CMPA office (1-2 days per week). If you prefer, you can choose to work out of the CMPA office in Ottawa, Ontario near the beautiful Dow’s Lake. This position cannot be performed fully remotely.
