Job Status:  Temporary Full-Time

Pay & Grade: $93,237 to $116,547 Annually Grade/Band: 9

Hours of Work:40 Hours per week

Initial location: Kitchener Operations Facility

Overview

The Supervisor, Operations (Sportsfields and Courts) oversees work related to planning, coordination, direction and supervision of all work duties related to sportsfields and outdoor courts maintenance throughout the city.  As a member of the supervisory team, the successful incumbent will also participate as a member of the supervisory team for the winter control maintenance program and on-call responsibilities

 

Responsibilities

  • Responsibility for interviewing and selection, orientation and training, direction, guidance and performance management of the subsection staff reporting out of the Kitchener Operations Facility and various satellite locations located throughout the City.
  • Plans annual and seasonal work programs (e.g. turf mowing and rehabilitation, turf repairs, outdoor court inspections and openings) by identifying resource requirements such as labour, materials supplies and equipment.
  • Responsible for oversight, inspection and maintenance of irrigation systems at various sportsfield locations and other areas with irrigation.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of the Sportsfield Cultural Practice program ensuring fields receive the appropriate maintenance required for bookable tournament play.
  • Plans and supervises the maintenance of all sportsfield and outdoor courts inventory for the City through surface and surrounding landscape and associated amenities maintenance to meet user group and service level expectations.
  • Oversees and monitors regular subsection activities including reviewing and authorizing time and pay records, tracking expenditures, monitoring relevant budgets, and ensuring accurate reporting to CityWorks as required for activities that are planned daily or weekly.
  • Proficient in the use of CLASS - Sportsfield booking program.
  • Applies technical knowledge related to turfgrass science and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to support maintenance and operation of the City’s sportsfield inventory.
  • Inspects for unsafe conditions, required maintenance and repairs of sportsfields and outdoor courts inventory in city parks.
  • Develops and maintains sportsfield and outdoor courts inventory and routing through ongoing communication with GIS staff.
  • Ensures proper use of turf-related fleet equipment (including upholding the idling policy, pre-trip vehicle inspections, equipment sharing, identification of maintenance needs, and accident prevention.)
  • Inspects and approves for maintenance by the City, new sportsfields and outdoor courts through the development process. 
  • Supervises staff and resources responsible for the salting, sanding, and plowing of City facility parking lots, sidewalks, trails and supports snow loading
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

Requirements

  • 2-year diploma or 2-year specialized post-secondary program or skilled trade journeyperson.
  • Minimum 2-year related experience required.
  • Valid MTO DZ class driver's license in good standing.
  • Advanced knowledge of turfgrass management and integrated pest management (IMP).
  • Advanced knowledge of outdoor courts design and annual maintenance requirements.
  • Ability to interpret Ministry of Environment legislation related to pesticides, ground water usage/contamination.
  • Understanding of specialized equipment such as mowers, tractors, truck and trailer, over-seeders, aerators, line painters (hand and GPS), gill machine (for fine grading), and all standard landscape maintenance equipment such as but not limited to push mowers, string trimmers and blowers.
  • Knowledge of planning and overseeing Parks winter maintenance programs including maintenance routes, scheduling and weather monitoring.  Ability to determine the appropriate action to take in accordance with legislated requirements and provincial maintenance standards.
  • Support preparation of annual budget review and projections.
  • Manage resources and deliver projects on budget and on time
  • Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.

  • Grade 12 diploma plus up to 1 year of post-secondary courses with minimum 2 years related and relevant experience or
  • 3-year degree /  diploma with minimum 1 year related and relevant experience.
