Position Overview:

Older Adult Services seeks a caring, patient, and dedicated individual to join our team.  Reporting to the Supervisor of Older Adult Services and in collaboration with the Program Coordinator, the Program Aide implements recreational activities both within the Senior Day Program and neighbourhood-based programs.

Hours of Work: Up to 24 hours per week on weekdays between the hours of 9:00am - 3:30pm 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in implementing various types of programming such as facilitating games and activities, gentle exercises, cognitive programming, and social groups. 
  • Assists with serving meals and refreshments considering any dietary needs of the participants.
  • Identifies unsafe conditions or practices and takes appropriate action to address them including reporting and removing hazards.
  • Modifies programs as needed to ensure inclusion of all participants.
  • Assists with the preparation of the program's physical environment including room setups and takedowns
  • Responds to unplanned events (e.g., personal care accidents, personality conflicts, health concerns) and completes incident reports, as appropriate. 
  • Maintains confidentiality of all issues related to the program participants. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Requirements:

  • Minimum Grade 12 diploma plus up to 1 year of additional job related post-secondary courses. 
  • 6 months experience delivering recreational programs for older adults experiencing physical frailty and/or adults with disabilities. 
  • Ability to support and project values compatible with the organization and participate as an effective team member. 
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Valid CPR Level “C” and Standard First Aid Certificate or willing to obtain within 2 months of hire.
  • Provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check at your own expense as a condition of employment.
  • Able to perform physical functions such as cleaning, lifting up to 30 lbs. unassisted, tidying, room set ups, pushing wheelchairs, assisting participants in and out of chairs, assisting participants in and out of the van, walking with participants, offering other forms of assistance to participants and provide personal care assistance in the washroom. 
  • Effective time management and organizational skills. 
  • General knowledge of programming for older adults, with the ability to facilitate small group conversations, chair exercises and leisure programming components while ensuring participant safety is preferred. 
  • Certification in safe food handling will be considered an asset.
  • Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
