Position Overview: Instructor/Lifeguard: Lifeguards and provides swimming instruction, skill evaluation, supervision of the participants, accident prevention, rescue skills, public education and public relations. Provides aquatic leadership program instruction and examinations (Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross) that meet the standards prescribed by the Lifesaving Society of Canada. Head Lifeguard: Responsible for operation of the pool including maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas, enforcing policies, procedures and regulations, and providing leadership to pool staff. Responsible for the pool and pool staff. |
Responsibilities: Instructor/Lifeguard Duties: Instructor Duties - Instructs assigned aquatic classes using established teaching methodology and procedures and in accordance to the governing body’s (Red Cross, Lifesaving Society) standards.
- Provides preliminary screening of patrons to establish water safety level.
- Monitors the activities of swimmers; explains and ensures policies, rules, and
- regulations are followed.
- Prepares swimming lesson plans according to established procedures.
- Evaluates performance and maintains records of performance, attendance, and report cards.
- Communicates students’ performance and progress to parents/caregivers.
- Provides CPR and First Aid.
Lifeguard Duties - Monitors the activities of swimmers; explains and ensures policies, rules, and regulations are followed.
- Warns swimmers of improper activities or hazards.
- Rescues persons in distress or in danger of drowning when indicated; provides
- CPR and First Aid, and uses safety/rescue equipment.
- Provides preliminary screening of patrons to establish water safety level.
- Maintains records and completes required reports.
- Performs maintenance duties including but not restricted to pool chemistry tests, and pool fouling clean up.
- Notifies supervisor of any accidents, rescues, or problems that have arisen.
- Ensures that the equipment is in place, operational, and stored away after use.
- Conducts routine change room checks.
- Completes opening/closing safety checklists.
Other Duties - Ensures compliance with Ontario Health Regulations and all relevant legislation and Policy and Procedures manuals.
- Responds to aquatic emergency situations and uses safety/rescue equipment.
- Participates in special events, water smart programs, emergency procedure training, and other training as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Head Lifeguard Duties: Leadership and Program Delivery - Provides direction and feedback to pool staff and volunteers regarding work related matters
- Ensures instructors conduct swimming lessons according to established procedures and program content
- Ensures instructors evaluate students’ performance and maintains records of performance and attendance
- Approves instructors swim lesson report cards
- Organizes pool space to balance needs of concurrent programming. Ensures appropriate program set-up/take-down
- Provides guidance and support to ensure adaptive support to meet requested accommodations
- Enforces water safety rules and regulations; perform rescues; perform first aid and resuscitation
- Ensures compliance with Ontario Health Regulations and other relevant legislation, as well as with City policies and procedures
- Provides direction to pool staff; ensures the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations, and other related legislation is followed
- Notifies supervisor of staff performance problems
- Responds to inquiries and resolves complaints. Reports escalated issues to supervisor
- Report client conduct or behaviour that contravenes established rules or regulations to supervisor for resolution
- Leads actions of pool staff in the event of a medical emergency, including immediate response and completion of accident reports
- Implements heat response plan as required
- Works with aquatic administrative staff regarding customer service issues
- Deals with and resolves last-minute pool staffing issues (e.g., staff changes, adjusting programs)
- Provides feedback to supervisor regarding program development and suggests improvements; assists supervisor with implementation
- Assists supervisor in identifying and implementing staff training
- Provides information related to all aspects of aquatic programming to parents, participants and pool staff
Pool Facility - Opens and closes facility. Completes safety check record. Determines if equipment and facility/pool is safe to use
- Informs facilitates management of pool maintenance needs (e.g., cleaning, chemical adjustments, and repairs)
- Ensures pool equipment is in good working order and identifies when equipment is in need of replacement or repair
- In collaboration with administrative staff on duty, leads the aquatic team response during facility related emergencies
- Checks the pool water quality and records information
- Responds to pool fouling. Determines actions to be taken to ensure issue is resolved. Adjusts programs accordingly and manages customer service concerns
- Completes incident/accident/fouling reports as required
Other Duties - Completes and approves time entry sheets
- Fills in with scheduling conflicts/issues of lifeguards and aquatic instructors to ensure adequate coverage is maintained during operating hours
- Performs Lifesaving Society Bronze examinations
- Performs other related duties as assigned

Requirements: Instructor/Lifeguard - Completion of some secondary school education.
- Minimum of up to 3 months of related experience.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Provide a satisfactory Police Reference Check (Vulnerable Sector) at your own expense as a condition of employment.
- Completion of all courses below:
- Valid CPR Level “C”/AED and Standard First Aid Certificate
- Current Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor certification
- Current National Lifeguard certification
- Must be reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
Head Lifeguard - Minimum 3 months of related experience and 455 hours of instructor and lifeguard experience
- Completion of all courses below:
- Current National Lifeguard award
- Valid CPR Level “C” Standard First Aid Certificate.
- Current Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor, or equivalent certification
- Current Lifesaving Society Instructor
- Aquatic Supervisor Training course
- Maintains fitness level in accordance with National Lifeguard certification standard
- Excellent problem-solving and de-escalation skills to address concerns or complaints.
- Exemplary customer service skills
- Ability to manage time effectively
- Ability to oversee the work of other staff in a variety of roles, provide feedback on performance to enable growth and to articulate when expectations are not being met
- Ability to provide leadership to all staff on site in the case of an emergency, utilizing emergency procedures
- Must be reliable with a good attitude and employment record
