Position Overview:

Lifeguards and provides swimming instruction, skill evaluation, supervision of the participants, accident prevention, rescue skills, public education and public relations. Provides aquatic leadership program instruction and examinations (Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross) that meet the standards prescribed by the Lifesaving Society of Canada.

 

This position is for the Aquatic job pool. This position offers staff the opportunity to pick up substitute shifts at any of our indoor and or outdoor pools. You will be trained to work at the facilities you are able to pick up shifts at. You can be scheduled a weekly shift once one becomes available.

Responsibilities:

 

Instructor Duties

  • Instructs assigned aquatic classes using established teaching methodology and procedures and in accordance to the governing body’s (Red Cross, Lifesaving Society) standards.
  • Provides preliminary screening of patrons to establish water safety level.
  • Monitors the activities of swimmers; explains and ensures policies, rules, and
  • regulations are followed.
  • Prepares swimming lesson plans according to established procedures.
  • Evaluates performance and maintains records of performance, attendance, and report cards.
  • Communicates students’ performance and progress to parents/caregivers.
  • Provides CPR and First Aid.

 

Lifeguard Duties

  • Monitors the activities of swimmers; explains and ensures policies, rules, and regulations are followed.
  • Warns swimmers of improper activities or hazards.
  • Rescues persons in distress or in danger of drowning when indicated; provides
  • CPR and First Aid and uses safety/rescue equipment.
  • Provides preliminary screening of patrons to establish water safety level.
  • Maintains records and completes required reports.
  • Performs maintenance duties including but not restricted to pool chemistry tests, and pool fouling clean up.
  • Notifies supervisor of any accidents, rescues, or problems that have arisen.
  • Ensures that the equipment is in place, operational, and stored away after use.
  • Conducts routine change room checks.
  • Completes opening/closing safety checklists.

 

Other Duties

  • Ensures compliance with Ontario Health Regulations and all relevant legislation and Policy and Procedures manuals.
  • Responds to aquatic emergency situations and uses safety/rescue equipment.
  • Participates in special events, water smart programs, emergency procedure training, and other training as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Requirements:

  • Completion of some secondary school education.
  • Minimum of up to 3 months of related experience.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must provide a satisfactory Police Reference Check (Vulnerable Sector) at your own expense as a condition of employment.
  • Completion of all courses below:
  1. Standard First Aid & CPR-C/AED certification
  2. Current Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor certification
  3. Current National Lifeguard certification
  • Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
