Position Overview:

The City of Kitchener provides high-quality, affordable, community-based recreation programs within many of our community centres. We offer a wide variety of programs for all ages and abilities that promote social, physical, and mental wellbeing.  Instructors are the foundation of these programs and play a key role in creating safe, welcoming, and inclusive opportunities for participants.  The city is currently seeking qualified, enthusiastic, creative, and dedicated candidates who can offer instruction and/or skills in a variety of programs including:

Instructors with multiple skill sets are able to teach multiple programs. Instructor contracts and time commitments are decided in consultation with staff and contracts are created accordingly. In your application, please indicate which role(s) you are applying for and list any relevant certifications attained (as appropriate).  

 

Responsibilities:

Program instructors will be responsible for: 

  • Planning and implementing creative and inclusive programs to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all program participants. 
  • Ensuring safety of program, wellbeing of all participants, creating social learning environments, and adhering to all health and safety protocols. 
  • Maintaining certifications (as required for the role), completing all required training, following directions from supervisors, and providing recommendations regarding customer feedback, lesson modification, and activity enhancements. 
  • During the course of instruction provide participants with modifications which consider functional needs and adapt teaching styles to assist participants with varied abilities. 
  • Completes records and reports including class attendance and accident/incident reports. Distributes applicable forms and program information. 
  • Ensures safe use, condition, and storage of any equipment. 
  • Responds to participants immediate concerns and or needs and provides customer service. 
  • Acts as a liaison between the facility and participants. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Requirements:

Activity/Class Monitor

  • Equivalent to partial secondary school education plus one (1) month of related experience.

 

Art, Dance, Music, Special Interest, Sport Instructor

  • Equivalent to partial secondary school education plus three (3) months of related experience and current technical and practical training in the discipline. 

 

Fitness, Meditation, Tai Chi, Yoga Instructor

  • Possess a high school diploma plus six (6) months of related experience.
  • Certified in the discipline.

 

All Other Requirements

  • Must have the ability to support and project values compatible with the organization. 
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including daytime, evening, weekends, and holidays, depending on the needs of the program. 
  • May be required to obtain a Police Record Check and/or produce First Aid Certifications (role dependent) 
  • Must have demonstrated experience providing instruction within a program setting. 
  • Must have demonstrated excellent interpersonal, communication (written and oral), customer service, and behaviour management skills. 
  • All staff must complete mandatory training prior to the start of program, training is offered through a combination of online and in-person learning.  
  • Must be reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
