Over A Century Of Culinary History.

Citarella’s story begins in 1983, when Joe Gurrera purchased the beloved neighborhood seafood shop on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, around since 1912. At the time, the market was small, occupying just a fraction of the space that Citarella’s flagship location does today. But, Joe had grown up working in his family’s Greenwich Village fish shop and was passionate about sourcing the freshest and finest—and he recognized the opportunity to grow Citarella and share his love of seafood.

Passion

Citarella’s story is one that is familiar to many hard-working New Yorkers: Joe would wake in the dead of night so that he could arrive at the Fulton Fish Market early and guarantee first pick of the day’s incoming catch. Then, after working late into the evening, he would sleep just a few hours before starting again.

Throughout the years, Joe has grown his Citarella family with friendly food experts who share his passion for quality—transforming the once stand-alone seafood shop into a full gourmet market. Today, Citarella offers fresh seafood; prime, dry-aged meats; chef-prepared foods and pastries; gourmet cheeses and charcuterie; smoked fish; produce; private-label goods; and more.

Relationships

Real people, real relationships, and really good food:
Citarella has access to the freshest and best because we work with people that we trust. Joe spent decades building relationships with fishermen, purveyors, and growers—a tradition that Citarella continues to this day. Our buyers frequent wholesale markets to hand-select items for our markets; we know our suppliers (and choose them carefully); and Joe still talks to his fishermen every day.

Growth

Citarella’s influence within the culinary community is always growing. Today, Citarella has 7 locations throughout New York City; the Hamptons; and Greenwich, Connecticut—an online seafood market that ships nationwide—and a wine shop offering a curated collection of fine wines and artisanal spirits.
