Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced accounting professional to lead our month-end close process in a SOX 404(b) environment. The Senior Manager or Associate Director, Accounting will be responsible for oversight and direction of day-to-day accounting operations. This position requires a hands-on approach to coaching and mentoring and will be critical in designing and implementing first-class accounting processes to support our company’s growth. This role will be instrumental in establishing and maintaining strong internal controls, supporting audit readiness, and scaling accounting operations for a commercial organization. This position reports to the Controller.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with US GAAP.
- Review journal entries, account reconciliations, payments, and financial reporting packages.
- Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls in accordance with SOX 404(b) requirements.
- Provide strategic guidance on control design and documentation, partnering with cross-functional teams to ensure operational effectiveness.
- Collaborate with external auditors and internal stakeholders to support audit processes.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and scalability.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering professional development and team growth.
- Support system implementations and upgrades as needed to align with commercialization goals.
- Analyze the reconciliation of our clinical accrual compared to the reports provided by the CRO.
- Maintain knowledge of FASB pronouncements, SEC rules, and regulatory compliance issues that impact the company. Implement accounting policies that conform to GAAP and SEC rules as appropriate. .
- Maintain a basic understanding of the company’s science.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; Certified Public Accountant (CPA) strongly preferred.
- 7 to 10 years of progressive accounting experience.
- For Associate Director, an additional 2-3 years experience is required.
- Public biotech/pharmaceutical company experience.
- Strong understanding of US GAAP and internal control frameworks.
- Experience in a SOX 404(b) compliant environment and clinical trial accounting.
- Demonstrated success leading and mentoring a team.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

- Public accounting experience
- Expertise and applicable experience with a commercial-stage biotechnology company
- Familiarity with NetSuite
San Diego - Hybrid
Senior Manager: $145,000 - $160,000 per year
Associate Director: $160,000 - $175,000 per year
The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the years of relevant industry experience, education, and skills/abilities.
