CICONIX, a Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) specializing in military and Veterans healthcare, is seeking a Forensic Scientist 3 to assist the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System (AFMES) provide medical-legal investigations, forensic analysis, and pathology services for U.S. military personnel, DoD civilians, and eligible individuals.

 

Job Overview: 

This role, Forensic Scientist 3, involves supervising DNA analysis staff, performing and reviewing DNA casework, and providing technical support in bioinformatics, IT, and lab automation. Key duties include setting up lab equipment, ensuring quality assurance, documenting methods, and preparing detailed reports for legal presentation. Candidates should have a bachelor's or advanced degree in biology, chemistry, or forensic science, with coursework in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and statistics.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Administrative and Documentation Support:

  • Perform filing, transcription, administrative typing, data entry, and document preparation using Microsoft Office.
  • Prepare and edit management support documentation.

DNA Analysis Supervision and Casework:

  • Supervise DNA analysis staff conducting tissue identification through DNA typing.
  • Perform and review DNA casework, including nuclear and mtDNA typing.
  • Testify as an expert witness on DNA findings when required.

Program Maintenance and Development:

  • Assist in program maintenance and development under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Provide technical support in bioinformatics, IT, and laboratory automation.
  • Support resource management and logistical activities.

Laboratory Setup and Equipment Management:

  • Set up and prepare laboratory instruments and equipment for operational use.
  • Write, review, and edit protocols, SOPs, and operating instructions for experimental programs and general lab management.

Quality Assurance and Compliance:

  • Oversee adherence to quality assurance standards, including equipment maintenance, reagent testing, and validation.
  • Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Perform proficiency testing and support standards maintenance.

Laboratory Housekeeping:

  • Maintain stock levels of expendable supplies and ensure cleanliness in lab work areas.

Research and Method Development:

  • Conduct investigative studies on tissue identification using DNA typing technologies.
  • Document methods development and research activities according to standard practices.

Reporting and Legal Documentation:

  • Prepare formal reports with professional interpretations suitable for legal presentation.
  • Review casework and finalize written reports for accuracy and compliance.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Education:  Bachelor’s (or its equivalent) or an advanced degree in a biology, chemistry, or forensic science-related area and shall have successfully completed a minimum of 9 cumulative semester hours or equivalent (graduate or undergraduate level) course work covering the following subject areas: biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology; and course work and/or training in statistics and/or population genetics as it applies to forensic DNA analysis.
  • Experience:  5-7 years (Bachelor’s), 3-5 years (Master’s), 0-2 years (PhD)
