Histology Technician
Description
We are seeking an experienced Histology Technician to join our Comparative Pathology Support team supporting the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research on Joint Base San Antonio – Fort Sam Houston. Our Histology Technicians provide technical skills in the preparation of tissue specimens for research experiments. Specific tasks include:
- Prepare the necropsy suites, instruments, and other materials necessary to conduct necropsies.
- Dissect or assist with dissection of laboratory animals, collecting specimens, such as tissues, culture samples, blood/body fluid samples, during necropsy, properly labeling and preserving specimens in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP), guidelines and policies
- Record all required data in the designated logs and/or databases, maintaining accurate records of all specimens and the resulting blocks and slides.
- Prepare preliminary records of gross findings, using appropriate pathological terminology and prepare and transmit gross photographic images
- Accession submitted cases into the pathology database and perform database entry procedures utilizing the appropriate computer systems
- Perform and monitor slide scanning and electronic storage of slide images
- Perform specimen processing procedures on necropsy specimens for histopathology. Specimens will be trimmed-in and embedded in accordance with standard operating procedures
- Process hard tissue specimens utilizing the pathology saw and the decalcified bone/tissue implant system, following CPB SOP and all safety regulations and guidelines
- Section samples with the microtome or cryostat and perform standardized and/or specialized stains, per investigator/pathologist request
- Perform immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence staining techniques on samples, suitable for microscopic examination and photography by the investigator and/or pathologist
- Archive completed cases and specimens IAW policies and procedures
- Evaluate, modify, and/or develop technical procedures to meet the special requirements of protocols, in consultation with the investigator/pathologist, on the methods and materials required to assure proper tissue handling, collection, and preservation for histological, immunohistochemical, and immunofluorescence analysis
- Perform routine chemistry, coagulation, and hematological and microbial analysis of research samples, in accordance with SOPs.
Preferred Experience and Credentials
- AA or bachelor’s degree in Science, Histotechnology or related field from an accredited college, or approved hospital-based Histotechnology program
- 2 years of clinical laboratory experience
- Histology Technician (HT) or Histology Technologist (HTL) (ASCP)
- US Citizenship and NACI Clearable
