Product Development Engineer

The Product Development Engineer will be the cross-functional technical expert responsible for ensuring plastic components and products are fully engineered and manufacturable across Lumistella’s product ecosystem. This role collaborates closely with category Product Development Managers and Product Designers to take surface CAD and develop engineering CAD for complex finished goods. This person will provide engineering specifications and drawings to supplement finished good product specifications for manufacturing and will assist in validating breadboard prototypes and pre-production samples.
While not responsible for product concepting or vendor sourcing/negotiations, this role is essential to ensuring factories are successful in building tooling and executing projects on time by providing accurate & complete production-ready CAD. This role will work closely with the factory and their tool-maker on tool design and development.
The Position Title will:
Spec Finalization & Engineering Documentation
- Provide engineering drawings to supplement final specifications, ensuring accuracy alongside PD Managers across categories. This includes plastic products as finished goods as well as components in hybrid products.
- Assist PD Managers with writing instruction sheets for products requiring consumer assembly; includes providing line drawings, assembly steps, order of operations, etc.
- Deliver and maintain:
- Dimensional overlays
- Exploded views
- CAD visualizations
- Component fit guidance
- Assembly diagrams (as needed)
- Tool Design (as needed)
Sample Evaluation & Risk Mitigation
- Lead early breadboard sample evaluations and cross-functional reviews during Concept & Design Phases.
- Participate in sample review cycles during Development Phase to support PD Managers and evaluate:
- Fit precision
- Dimensional variance
- Compression/shifting tolerances
- Support Quality and Compliance by providing technical validation on materials or tolerances as needed.
- Provide input and/or recommendations on functional and reliability requirements based on material selections and construction.
Cross-Functional & Vendor Collaboration
- Work closely with:
- Product Development Managers to finalize tech packs and engineering specs
- Product & Packaging Design Teams to preserve visual and structural integrity
- Collaborate with Sourcing and factory partners to resolve feasibility questions and integrate feedback into final engineering documentation.
- Provide CAD files and other material data, plus tool designs to Costing team to assist with product cost estimates.
- Partner with Production teams to ensure that CAD assemblies, tolerances, and materials are aligned with real-world manufacturing conditions.
Key Interfaces
If you want to be one of us...
The ideal candidate will bring:
- 6+ years in product engineering within consumer goods, toys, plastics/injection molding, or similar industries
- Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, Rhino, ArtiosCAD, or equivalent)
- Deep understanding of product assembly, tolerance management, and DFM (Design for Manufacturing)
- Experience reviewing samples and resolving spec issues in partnership with vendors and sourcing
- Experience working with global suppliers and factories, particularly in Asia.

Education requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field
