Systems Engineer, Data Services

The Systems Engineer, Data Services works closely with the Investment Management team within Vulcan to help drive better investment decision making through data.  This position will improve and maintain the organization’s data infrastructure, have experience with automated process flows, and provide on-call support. The Systems Engineer will lead the end-user community to become more advanced and self-supporting owners and consumers of data.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
 

  • Partner closely with teams across the organization to support initiatives and data-driven decision making 
  • Gather requirements, consult and guide stakeholders around best-practices in building modern data solutions 
  • Support the continual design of the data framework with the goal of providing a state-of-the-art reporting environment to service the needs of end users 
  • Engage with teams to provide the most accurate and relevant information to help drive meaningful business decisions 
  • Analyze structured and semi-structured data sets from a variety of sources 
  • Partner directly with the business teams to propose, define, implement and track new solutions and technologies 
  • Contribute to technical and architectural direction of data infrastructure capabilities 
  • Develop ELT/ETL workflows in support of data warehouse updates 
  • Design, document, and manage enterprise data models and processes 
  • Instill a data governance program that creates business value from corporate data while adhering to applicable compliance requirements

  • Strong problem-solving skills, comfortable with ambiguity and imperfect data 
  • Self-motivated with a high degree of intellectual curiosity 
  • Experience leading projects with multiple dependencies and constraints  
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish credibility with technical and non-technical stakeholders including executive leaders 

Knowledge, experience, skill, and/or ability  

Required 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, Finance, or other related disciplines  
  • 5+ years of professional experience in data modeling/advanced business analytics 
  • Knowledge of database management best practices and system controls/security 
  • Advanced data modeling skills and experience with Microsoft Analysis Services 
  • Advanced SQL Server Administration, SQL query and DAX skills 
  • Experience with Data Warehouse development in an Azure cloud environment 
  • Familiar with Microsoft PowerApps technologies 

Preferred 

  • Experience with one or more programming languages (Python, C#, etc.) 
  • Experience with source control systems (Git, Azure DevOps, SVN, etc.) 
  • Proficiency in Power BI development (Power Query) and administering Power BI Service 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP, etc.) 

Education/experience/certifications  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Statics, Mathematics, or related field 
  • 5+ years of industry experience as a Systems Engineer or related specialty (ie. Software Engineer, Business Intelligence Engineer, Data Scientist) with track record of manipulating, processing, and extracting value from large databases
