Staff Accountant

The Staff Accountant will play a role in maintaining Vulcan's financial accounting processes and systems.  Because this role will have the opportunity to work with many different business groups within Vulcan, this position must exhibit strong professionalism and communication skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform tasks in the monthly, quarterly and annual accounting close processes.
  • Perform reconciliations, such as bank accounts, fixed assets, and other general ledger accounts.
  • Compile and prepare journal entries.
  • Prepare financial reports and research information for external parties and internal stakeholders, including but not limited to external audits, annual tax preparation process, budgeting and forecasting, and other ad hoc requests.
  • Identify opportunities for process and procedure improvements.
  • Participate in cross-training with peers on a variety of tasks and areas of responsibility.
  • Apply principles of accounting and use judgment and other professional skills in determining the appropriate procedures for preparing and maintaining accounting records and reports.
  • Work effectively both independently and in a collaborative team environment.
  • Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity and fulfillment of commitments.

Knowledge, experience, skill, and/or ability 

Required

  • Accounting software/systems experience and/or a basic understanding of financial systems, processes, and internal controls.
  • High degree of flexibility and customer service attitude. Demonstrated success in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment.
  • Detail oriented, organized, and analytical in approach to tasks.
  • Ability to communicate with Vulcan personnel and external contacts in a professional manner with limited supervision.
  • Basic knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • MS Office experience, intermediate knowledge of Excel required.

Preferred

  • Experience working in a multiple company accounting environment.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft or other Oracle accounting systems.
  • Experience with data warehouses, system queries, and/or other data compilation methods.

Education/experience/certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A or B.S.) in accounting from an accredited institution and one year relevant accounting experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
