Job title: Digital Optimiser / Data Specialist (12 Month Fixed Term Contract)

Responsible to: SVP, Strategic Content and Partnerships

Department: Universal Global Classics & Jazz

Location of work: Kensington Village


Main purpose of role

  • Develop with Universal/RepCo colleagues an agreed set of jazz metadata standards that reflects best practice across the industry and is both pragmatic and logical.
  • Ensure our metadata is compliant with the current standards required by our separate Global Business Partners.
  • Work towards maximising availability of as many of our assets (tracks, or albums) across as many of our Global Business Partners as is possible, under the simple headline ‘Everything, Everywhere’.
  • Monitor pirate activity across the digital space of our UMG Jazz repertoire and work with other departments to ensure it is claimed for UMG.
  • Accurately curate and creatively tag repertoire based on consumer preference/genre/mood.
  • Provide a service to and secure the trust of our legendary jazz and classical labels to supply information as required to perform your role.
  • Undertake data analyses, data aggregation and report on triage / quality control on data clean up.
  • Additional ad hoc projects as required.


Person specification

  • First and foremost you are a person who enjoys and is comfortable working across various data systems at a granular level. Knowledge of Universal systems is desirable but not essential.
  • You have working knowledge of how the recorded music business works including passing knowledge of publishing, neighbouring and ancillary rights.
  • You understand and enjoy the challenges of genre specific metadata especially as it relates to the digital world of download, streaming and voice recognition.
  • Excellent attention to detail proving to be a meticulous, analytical individual who can be objective and thrives in a fast-paced environment.
  • You like jazz and have some knowledge of the catalogues of Verve, Bluenote and ECM in particular, but are also priority and commercially driven.
  • You are a completer finisher, able to see complex projects through to a satisfactory conclusion but also flexible enough to change priorities suddenly when required.
