The Cliffs at Walnut Cove is a private, 18 hole Jack Nicklaus Signature designed golf course located just minutes away from Asheville, North Carolina. Walnut Cove is an all cool season course, featuring bentgrass greens, tees and fairways with Kentucky bluegrass roughs.  We are looking for a highly motivated person with a passion for golf course management to join our team and learn every aspect of providing the highest quality Member experience.

JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant in Training ensures that the day to day care, maintenance, and renovations of the golf course and surrounding grounds are in the highest quality condition.  Support the golf maintenance team in the specified areas of irrigation maintenance and repairs as well as chemical applications.  Give direction to team members and assists in the scheduling of projects to be completed.


  • Participates in course renovations 
  • Fertilize, verticut and aerify greens, tees, fairways, and roughs
  • Calculate and mix fertilizes and pesticides as well as spraying tees, greens, fairways and roughs
  • Monitor and recognize common turf diseases, weeds and insects and treat accordingly
  • Maintain golf course irrigation equipment and make necessary repairs
  • Monitor course for irrigation needs and assist in the hand watering
  • Takes direction from Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents in leading and directing small teams for special projects and tasks
  • Operate golf course maintenance equipment to include: mowers, trimmers, edgers, weed eaters, blowers, aerators, etc.
  • Mow greens, tees, fairways, roughs, collars, and approaches
  • Executes daily course setup duties
  • Sand topdress greens, tees and fairways
  • Performs golf course maintenance duties as assigned by the management team


  • 2 or more years experience in golf course maintenance is preferred
  • Degree or currently enrolled in a turfgrass management program
  • Be part of a strong team environment 
  • The ability to acquire an NC pesticide license  
  • Irrigation installation, troubleshooting, repair, and scheduling
  • Basic understanding of operating golf course equipment 
  • Must be accurate and have strong attention to detail
  • Ability to operate motorized equipment
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends and holidays


  • Ability to lift 60 lbs. frequently
  • Ability to walk 3-5 miles a day
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work on a daily basis to include frequent handling, reaching, lifting, carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, and balancing
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold while being exposed to all forms of precipitation
