Veterinary Surgery Ward Nurse- Overnight
Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists is seeking a full-time veterinary surgery ward nurse to join our surgery team in the Dennis, MA, location. This is an overnight position.
About this role
The surgery ward nurse is a critical part of the surgery team who cares for patients post-operatively as well as provides support to the surgeons and surgical nurses. This is an entry level position where the right person who meets the required qualifications will be utilized to function as a vital member of the team while learning and honing the additional skills necessary to progress in various areas of veterinary medicine.
The surgery ward nurse will
- Obtain vital signs, provide food, and monitor patients for pain/comfort following surgical procedures.
- Oversee post-operative care for canine, feline, and exotic patients
- Check IV catheters for patency and bandages for fit and cleanliness.
- Administer oral and intravenous medications according to doctors’ orders.
- Walk postoperative patients, using assistance when required.
- Communicate effectively with the nurses and doctors regarding patients.
- Maintain ward cleanliness, including laundry and washing dishes.
Required Qualifications
- Previous experience as a veterinary assistant or technician is required.
- Knowledge of and the ability to confidently administer oral and intravenous medications are required.
- Ability to solve mathematical equations for medication dosages
- Excellent communication and time management skills
- Ability to apply critical thinking to problem solving
- Ability to handle multiple tasks
- Lifting and restraint of pets at least 50 pounds and the ability to work on feet most of the day
Salary, Schedule, and Benefits Include (but are not limited to)
- This is an overnight position, 6p to 6 a, three days a week
- Schedules include some weekends and a holiday shift rotation.
