Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Residency

Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists (CCVS) invites applications positions in our Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) Residency Program. As a 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital, CCVS is dedicated to training the next generation of ECC specialists through a comprehensive three-year program.

Our mission is to cultivate board-eligible ECC doctors who excel in both the art and science of individualized patient care in a private practice setting. We emphasize critical thinking, compassionate care, and a strong commitment to animal health. Residents engage in meaningful clinical research, lead educational initiatives, and work closely with specialists, allowing them to hone both clinical and leadership skills.

About Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists

With two facilities located in Buzzards Bay and Dennis, Massachusetts, CCVS offers advanced diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including:

  • ICU, anesthetic, and transport ventilators
  • Endoscopy, ultrasound, and digital radiography
  • A GE multi-slice CT scanner
  • Comprehensive in-house labs with blood gas, coagulation, and lactate testing
  • Dedicated oxygen cages, telemetry, and a blood bank

Our facilities are staffed by a diverse team of specialists, criticalists, associate veterinarians, and interns. Residents will have the opportunity to rotate between both locations, gaining exposure to a wide range of cases and procedures.

Residency Program Highlights
  • Our ECC residency offers a unique blend of private practice experience with an academic environment. You’ll receive over 70% of your training directly under the supervision of board-certified criticalists, with 24/7 access to phone consultations. Twice-daily cage-side rounds, weekly didactic sessions, and a resident-led journal club provide a robust educational structure.
  • Additionally, there are dedicated “ventilator weeks” for studying, research, or focused care on critical patients. Residents are expected to actively contribute to clinical research and must submit a first-authored paper to meet ACVECC requirements.
  • Emergency surgery training is another key component of our program. Under the guidance of 6 ACVS Diplomates, residents will develop competency in emergency surgical procedures, with opportunities for additional surgical training based on interest.
