EHS Manager

Position Title:Environmental, Health & Safety Manager

Position Summary:

 

Canadian Solar are currently in search for an EHS Manager to work in the UK within the Battery Energy Storage Systems sector (BESS). The ideal candidate will have BESS and construction safety experience to join our team to work on all EHS aspects, including BESS equipment safety, construction safety, site work, all front-end safety document requirements including Construction Design Management (CDM) and during construction, commissioning and operation & maintenance (O&M).

 

The EHS Manager will be an integral part of the System Solutions and Energy Storage (SSES) UK team, working closely with the Project Implementation, Engineering and Service teams for the full project life cycle. Suitable candidates will thrive in a high-speed, multitasking environment and must have a positive, proactive, team-focused approach to work, ensure that region-specific EHS standards and industry best practices are executed on Canadian Solar BESS Projects. The successful candidate will assist to ensure that safety standards are implemented in design, development and operation of our internal BESS products (Solbank).

 

Primary Responsibilities:

 

  • Provide expertise, support and assistance on the development, implementation and monitoring of the EHS management system and project specific OHS programs, plans, risk registers, and management system components including policies, procedures, work instructions and forms.
  • Ensure H&S standards are developed and executed on Canadian Solar BESS projects in the EMEA.
  • Collaborate with Management teams on all environmental, safety and quality processes to share key learnings.
  • Assist the Project Manager with contractual WHSE requirements as part of client requirements such as, H&S reports, safety point-of-contact and attending regular progress meetings.
  • Assist the project implementation team with UK specific H&S regulations mainly concerned with Construction Design Management (CDM) requirements both upfront and during construction phase.
  • Be responsible for emergency response planning, fire prevention, hazardous waste management, resource conservation, regulatory compliance, development, and updates of EHS policies and plans as required for the UK requirements.
  • Conduct on-site in-field EHS audits, inspections, and observations of EHS related project activities to monitor their compliance, identify and follow up on non-compliance, areas for improvement and other such gaps related to applicable laws, regulations, contract commitments and Canadian Solar’s internal corporate requirements.
  • Confirm project sites comply with all current EHS regulations and ensure that all employees are aware of safety requirements, prepared to follow safety procedures, and have relevant training, certifications, and licenses to perform the work where applicable. Complete risk assessments and job hazard assessments in support of site activities.
  • Proactively recognise and encourage positive workplace OHS practices, and compliance to program and legislative requirements among project personnel and contractors. Collaboratively interact with them to help identify solutions to OHS compliance and program gaps. Complete contractor OHS program and plan reviews as part of tender and contractor selection processes specific to project needs and requirements.
  • Support overall EHS program improvement initiatives and contribute to global best practice alignment and implementation. Source, develop and deliver necessary EHS training sessions, maintain and update training records and certificates.
  • Prepare detailed reports and follow up on recommended corrective actions associated with completed compliance & oversight reports, incident reports, observations, and root-causes.
  • Document/record safety data pertaining to project oversight activity including entering/transcribing oversights information through various internal Canadian Solar’s information management systems according to established procedures.
  • Work with legal department to ensure all sub-contracts are sufficiently obligating the contractor for their insurance obligations depending on regional jurisdiction requirements. Including collecting contractor licenses, insurance certificates etc.
  • Keep up to date on latest EHS and ESG trends in the energy Storage industry. Provide constructive feedback and coaching to all roles within the framework regarding contract and site safety expectations.
  • Create and maintain an annual HSE improvement plan with agreed actions amongst key Canadian Solar site leadership team members.
  • Actively participate and engage on all safety related matters relevant to specific stage gate deliverables.
  • Be willing and able to travel to all sites through the full EMEA region as per business requirements understanding extended durations during construction activities.
  • Be willing and able to work flexible hours (evenings, weekends) as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the management and Director of Quality and EHS.

 

Qualifications and Requirements:

 

  • Proven track record in HSE Management with a minimum of 3 years experience in a similar role within construction projects
  • Knowledge of internal and external audits with an understanding of 3rd party certification practices.
  • Recognised Quality, Environmental and HSE qualification such as NEBOSH General Certificate.
  • NEBOSH Diploma desirable.
  • Recent experience with a good level of knowledge in all CDM requirements, commissioning safety, O&M safety, fall protection, fire prevention, PPE and high voltage electrical safety.
  • Experience of CDM roles and responsibilities including Principal Contractor, Designer and Client.
  • Membership of a recognised HSE related institute i.e., IOSH, MIRSM, IEMA etc.
  • An understanding of ISO 45001 ISO 9001.
  • Experience of performing site audits / assessments of sub-contractors and suppliers
  • Excellent time-management, planning and organisational skills
  • Be self-motivated, well-organized and goal-focused; work well and deliver results in an independent and hybrid working environment.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft office tools.
