Project Engineer

Position Title:Project Engineer

Position Summary:

The Project Engineer is part of a cross-functional team that focuses on executing battery storage projects in Australia with market-leading technologies. The Project Engineer is responsible for all engineering activities of two or three storage projects from the design phase through to commissioning, ensuring successful execution. The Project Engineer is expected to spend over 50% of their time at the project site.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the development of technical specifications, vendor reviews, and supplier qualifications, including testing and commissioning aspects of energy storage projects.
  • Support procurement activities by managing supplier information gathering, generating technical requirement documents, and maintaining supplier Q&A logs.
  • Manage engineering consultants or the EPC performing grid interconnection studies as required by AEMO or NSPs in accordance with the NER.
  • Review and evaluate technical aspects of EPC bidder proposals related to energy storage during EPC selection.
  • Review project documents and preliminary designs to identify gaps in scope and responsibility, ensuring project success. This requires a comprehensive understanding of engineering, construction, and permitting concepts.
  • Responsible for technical project execution, which requires managing scope, stakeholders, and schedules, ensuring alignment among all parties.
  • Interface with internal (project managers, product engineers, sales team) and external customers (utilities, AHJs, contractors, end customers) to ensure consistent communication.
  • Manage engineering consultants and host weekly coordination and design review meetings with stakeholders.
  • Review and coordinate design and technical information from suppliers and contractors.
  • Manage the design review process, ensuring all comments are addressed.
  • Inspect construction work and resolve installation and commissioning technical issues.
  • Suggest product design or procedural improvements based on lessons learned.

Other:

  • Maintain and develop key strategic relationships with major vendors, suppliers, and contractors in the energy storage industry.
  • Support value-engineering and process improvement efforts by sharing project-specific lessons learned.

 

Qualifications and Experience Requirements:

 

  • BS in an engineering field or equivalent experience/practical knowledge.
  • 5-10 years of relevant experience in project and/or systems engineering within Energy Storage integrators or EPC contractors.
  • Direct experience in battery storage systems, medium voltage stations, and/or related products/systems.
  • Proficient in the specification, technical bid analysis, and procurement of major equipment (inverters, transformers, switchgear, etc.).
  • Solid understanding of commissioning and testing of Energy Storage projects.
  • Proficient in construction project management (Submittals, RFIs, Change Orders, Non- Conformance, As-builts).

 

  • Proficient in MV Electrical Installations, Ampacity Calculations, Short Circuit/Load Flow, Protective Device Coordination, Arc Flash, Grounding (per IEEE80), and other design topics.
  • Working knowledge of processes and technical requirements prescribed under the National Electricity Rules.
  • Experience with NSP requirements for network planning, augmentation, and generator connections.
  • Global perspective and awareness, with experience working across diverse cultures in a multinational company.
  • A results-oriented professional with a can-do attitude, setting aggressive, measurable goals and being prepared to be evaluated on their achievement.
