About Us:            Since 1948, Family & Children Services of Silicon Valley (FCS) has been promoting the resilience, safety, and wellness of individuals, families, and communities throughout Santa Clara County. FCS brings its counseling, prevention, and support services to dozens of community locations, including schools, community centers, jails, and health clinics. FCS counsels children and teens coping with the effects of trauma, provides a way forward for adults in recovery from addiction, and empowers families to heal from violence and abuse. FCS merged with and became a division of Caminar in January 2017.

Position Summary:          The Relief Peer Support Worker is an entry-level position requiring utilization and knowledge of lived experience to support adults with serious mental disorders and substance abuse disorders that are residing at the peer respite house.  Relief Peer Support Workers replace regular Peer Support Workers in their absence. The position of Relief Peer Support Worker is under the supervision of the Peer Supervisor, with the requirement to attend weekly individual and group supervision. This position must be available to provide adult guests of the peer respite program with positive and supportive engagement, safety, through a wellness and recovery model.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides assistance and mentoring to guests at the peer respite house.
  • Manages difficult or emotional guest situations; Responds promptly to guest needs; Solicits guest feedback to improve service; Responds to requests for service; Meets commitments.
  • Takes part in enrolling guests in to the respite house. Ensure and assessing for safety and qualifying identifiers.
  • Informs peers regarding the wellness and recovery process, including the guest/family, self-help and empowerment movements and self-help practices in support of mental health and substance use recovery;
  • Consults with Peer Supervisor and co-workers to assist in evaluating guest needs or problems;
  • Provides appropriate documentation and paperwork as needed on guest’s services;
  • Develops and promotes wellness and recovery groups, communication and program activities; compose and maintain house chore and activities schedules.
  • May perform as a disaster service worker;
  • May provide transportation to peers;
  • Communicates, represents and promotes the peer perspective within the mental health system;
  • Develops effective working relationships with agencies and organizations to advocate for guest and family/caregiver empowerment including self-help and wellness/recovery movements;
  • May provide and inform guests of community resources and supports.
  • Assists guests in navigation of the mental health system, referral to various county agencies, community mental health organizations, accessing benefits, personal medical services, social and recreational opportunities, special events, conferences, workshops and training;
  • Attends trainings and staff meetings as required;
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must be available to work evening, overnight and weekend shifts on a short notice, and to work overtime when required. Ability to keep a flexible work schedule is therefore essential.
  • Experience Note: The knowledge and abilities are typically acquired through lived experience as a consumer (or family member/caregiver) of the services provided by a mental health services program AND six (6) months of experience providing direct mental health peer support or peer  recovery services to individuals or working with family members/caregivers of individuals with mental health issues.
  • Customer Service – Manages difficult or emotional guest/staff situations; Responds promptly to guest needs; Solicits guest feedback to improve service; Responds to requests for service; Meets commitments.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to meet and receive a criminal records clearance, as required by Title XXII, other licensing regulations, and Caminar practices.
  • This position requires frequent driving. A valid California driver license, reliable personal vehicle, current personal auto insurance as required by law, and an MVR sufficient to obtain and reasonably maintain insurability under agency auto liability policies are all essential job requirements.
  • Must be able to pass post offer, pre-employment medical and drug tests as required under State Community Care Licensing regulations and/or agency policies.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification.
