The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is looking for a Junior Sous Chef to join our enthusiastic and energetic Catering Team. Our Catering team offers 8 unique venues across 120 acres and we were named the 2023 Winner for Best Unique Wedding Venue in Calgary. The Junior Sous Chef is responsible for oversight of the culinary operation in the absence of the Sous Chef. As a key member of the kitchen, the Junior Sous Chef will be required to execute all event orders as required and oversee the daily operations of Grazers Restaurant. This may include hands-on preparation of food, delivery, and clean-up.

What you will do:   
  • Create exceptional experience through high quality food and superior customer service
  • Responsible for ordering and counting inventory according to company guidelines
  • Create cost effective and mission driven menus
  • Adhere to policies and procedures regarding sanitation and sanitary food handling in all kitchen spaces
  • Prepare food as directed, following specifications on Event Orders
  • Has direct oversight of the operation of Grazers Restaurant & Patio kitchen
  • Supervise and coach kitchen team members ensuring company standards and guidelines are being maintained.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of all storage areas
  • Support other positions within the kitchen that need help
  • Support Sous Chefs as necessary on administrative tasks such as invoice allocation, schedules, and prep lists
  • Comply with the Zoo’s health and safety program
  • Perform additional duties as required
What you will bring:   
  • 3-5 years’ experience cooking for banquets or events required
  • Alberta Food Safety Training is required
  • Red Seal Training is strongly preferred
  • Class 5 Driver’s License and the ability to operate golf carts and 1-ton panel trucks
  • Experience with menu engineering and food cost controlling methods
  • Strong leadership and customer service skills
  • Ability to work with little supervision
  • Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

  • Some minor lifting tasks
  • Exposure to hot & cold elements in kitchen
  • Consistent exposure to flora and fauna on Zoo grounds
  • Availability to work on weekends, statutory holidays, and evenings when required
The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The organization follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
