The Opportunity
Leverage your industry expertise and join our expanding team in this Underwriting Product Consultant role. The Underwriting Product Consultant will drive the conceptualization and strategic positioning of Builders Mutual’s insurance products for commercial lines of business with a specific focus on a product line and state(s) responsibility. This position will actively participate in data-driven market analysis, competitive, and internal product effectiveness analysis. Experience with Commercial Casualty is preferred, specifically commercial auto and umbrella.

Your WORK as an Underwriting Product Consultant will make a difference by:
- Manage product analysis or research.
- Leverage data-driven expertise of product research and development, competitive market analysis, portfolio management for demographics to be the key influencer of data-driven decision-making.
- Product Performance: Monitor performance and growth of assigned line(s) of business, including profitability, exposure profile, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and portfolio analysis.
- Work with Underwriting Leadership to set benchmarks and evaluate performance of products, programs, and tools.
- Market Analysis: Active participation in market analysis and competitive analysis to inform product strategies and positioning. Mapping the competitive landscape and aligning to companywide objectives.
- Product Strategy: Leading the conceptualization and strategic positioning of insurance products for all lines of business. Identify market segments and provide recommendations for product strategies related to the development of new products within the marketplace.
- Cross-functional Collaboration & Stakeholder Management: Work with key strategic partners such as Sales, Underwriting, Actuarial, and Marketing to create strong communications centered on product offerings and portfolio management. Presenting findings & recommendations to influence stakeholders.
- Technical Expertise: Demonstrate the highest level of technical expertise in product lines of business to state/regional underwriting and services leadership, leveraging all P&L levers including Large, Middle Market, and EAU underwriting professionals.
- Maximize reinsurance strategies by engaging with reinsurance partners for market insight.
- Work with Product Specialists from the Actuarial Services areas, to prepare and submit deliverables for filing with state DOIs (rate and rule manuals, policy applications, forms, agency notices, policyholder notices, worksheets, and underwriting guidelines and practices).
- Travel to agency partners and clients to evaluate current and future product positions.
Skills to get the JOB done RIGHT:
- Bachelor’s degree with at least 5-7 years of experience in commercial lines underwriting, product development, or claims or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Extensive knowledge of coverage forms, endorsements, rules, and rating procedures.
- Advanced skills in interpreting and revising complicated insurance contracts and designing and revising rate and rule manuals.
- Ability to understand rating and statistical algorithms including the interaction of the various factors and relativities that are applied.
- Understanding of business and insurance ratios and ability to communicate the impact of business decisions upon those ratios.
- Ability to understand and communicate complex insurance contract language and concepts.
- Attention to detail
- Demonstrates ability to build and maintain strong relationships, while meeting or exceeding profitability and quality standards
- Strong PC proficiency
- Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively (both verbally and in writing) with various audiences including insurance department personnel, underwriters, claims and marketing staff, agents, insured, and management.
Travel Requirements
Travel required within an established operating footprint.
