The Opportunity
The Middle Market Underwriting Manager will report to the AVP/Underwriting and is responsible for managing underwriting and rating operations in assigned states or territories to achieve corporate operating, financial, people and customer goals.
The success of our company is rooted in teamwork, the way we care about the people we work with and serve. This hybrid role will work in our Raleigh office a minimum of two days with the flexibility of working from home three days a week.
Your WORK as an Underwriting Manager will make a difference as you:
Meet or exceed new business production, retention, and profitability goals for the assigned territory
- Make and manage underwriting decisions within territory to accept, decline or modify risks
- Achieve profitability of assigned territory book: develop, recommend, and implement necessary action plans including changing eligibility, pricing, and forms
- Evaluate competitive position of products in the marketplace for pricing and coverage
- Partner with marketing to identify new opportunities for product enhancements
- Review complex referrals including composite rating, large deductibles, and manuscript forms
- Ensure compliance with all industry and state regulations for assigned territory
- Establish department vision and lead team to the desired state and performance level
Manage staff members and ensure staff are qualified, trained, and developed to meet business opportunities
- Through direct and indirect supervision: recruit, select, train, mentor, develop, and manage quality and performance of staff members such that goals are met or exceeded, and staff engagement and satisfaction are high
- Achieve exceptional customer service by meeting or exceeding established service standards
Serve as a functional expert as needed on information technology issues that affect the territory or department
- Create action plans to improve profitability.
- Develop influential agency relationships through agency visits, proactively connecting with critical key producers and principles to:
- Evaluating customer experience
- Determine areas of improvements (products, rates, workflows, professional development)
- Identify, champion and drive initiatives, projects, service levels to proactively anticipate future needs of financial and performance goals, competitive challenges and/or staff development
- Ensure compliance with all industry and state regulations for assigned territory
Skills to get the JOB done RIGHT:
- Bachelor’s degree with 5-7 years of work experience in the insurance industry with solid knowledge of risk selection and pricing. Must have a record of having successfully achieved business goals, including managing staff members, preferably in a property and casualty insurance company. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
- Insurance or course designations preferred (e.g., CIC, CPCU)
- Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills
- Proven ability to work across all levels of an organization and develop cross-functional alliances as needed
- Product expertise in the areas of commercial coverage and pricing
- Demonstrated ability to underwrite accounts over $100,000 in premium
- Excellent customer service skills
- Demonstrated negotiation, sales, and time management skills
- Ability to design and map workflow
- Excellent computer and technical skills
Travel Requirements: Up to 10%
