The OPPORTUNITY

Builders Mutual seeks a trusted advisor to serve in this newly created opportunity as our Vice President/General Counsel, providing legal support to the Company, CEO, the Board, and Builders Mutual’s Executive management. In this executive role, you will oversee all legal affairs, including general legal counsel, governance, contract management, regulatory compliance, litigation, outside counsel coordination, and all other legal matters affecting our organization.

 

As a visible senior leader, the Vice President/General Counsel at Builders Mutual will be at the forefront of our legal operations. We are looking for a candidate with substantial legal qualifications, agility, and innovation, as well as strong strategic and analytical skills with a proven track record in legal management.  Your role will involve not only managing legal operations but also playing a key role in fostering collaboration and building strong relationships within our organization.  Because the success of our company is rooted in teamwork, the way we care about the people we work with and serve, this hybrid role will work in our Raleigh office a minimum of two days with the flexibility of remote work three days a week. 

 

Your WORK as our Vice President/General Counsel will make a difference as you:

  • Serve as an advisor to the Executive Team by providing expert and strategic legal advice and support for all internal and external Company affairs as well as ensuring legal and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide leadership and guidance on legal issues including but not limited to corporate law, contracts, real and intellectual property, civil litigation, dispute resolution, and risk management.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders on legal matters, maintaining effective communication and disclosures.
  • Develop and implement legal processes and strategies to support company business objectives while mitigating legal risks and potential liabilities.
  • Stay abreast of changes in laws and regulations in all jurisdictions where the company does business while proactively developing and implementing compliance programs that may become necessary.
  • Represent the company in any legal proceeding as may be necessary. Engage and partner with external counsel to represent the company in litigation or other legal proceedings as may be required.
  • Contribute to corporate strategy and develop programs to meet objectives.
  • In partnership with Business Leaders, review and negotiate a variety of contracts and agreements while overseeing and conducting legal due diligence to protect company business interests in alignment with legal and industry standards.

 

Skills to get the JOB done RIGHT:

  • Experienced attorney with legal, regulatory, and claims legal experience in the property/casualty insurance industry. Preferred 10 years total experience as a licensed Attorney of which a minimum of 7 years working with property and casualty insurance laws and litigation.
  • Juris Doctor from ABA-accredited law program and currently admitted and in good standing with the North Carolina State Bar. Alternatively, admitted to and in good standing with the Bar of another state but eligible for admission to the North Carolina State Bar through comity.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex legal matters and provide strategic advice to senior leadership.
  • Superior written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.  Ability to engage whole company in the delivery of critical business projects.
  • Superior organization, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in intellectual property, corporate governance, regulatory and compliance, risk management and litigation management are preferred.
  • Experience interacting with the Board of Directors, audit and investment committees and other board-level executives are preferred.
