Position Summary

The Director, Human Resource will plan, lead, direct, develop, and coordinate the policies, activities, and staff of the Human Resource (HR) department, ensuring legal compliance and implementation of the organizations mission and talent strategy across all lines of business.

They are responsible for translating business needs into integrated human resource solutions to fully leverage employee capability within Canada, US, and Mexico, to deliver excellent, consistent, sustainable performance over the long term.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with senior leadership to understand the organizations goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention.
  • Plans, leads, develops, coordinates, and implements policies, processes, training, initiatives, and surveys to support the organizations human resource compliance and strategy needs.
  • Administers or oversees the administration of human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.
  • Identifies staffing and recruiting needs; develops and executes best practices for hiring and talent management.
  • Conducts research and analysis of organizational trends including review of reports and metrics from the organizations human resource information system (HRIS) or talent management system.
  • Monitors and ensures the organizations compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law; applies this knowledge to communicate changes in policy, practice, and resources to upper management.
  • Develops and implements departmental budget.
  • Facilitates professional development, training, and certification activities for HR staff.
  • Lead with the clear intention of supporting managers and executives in achieving their strategic and financial objectives.
  • Manage performance of HR team members by providing fair and accurate formal and informal feedback, emphasizing employee strengths, and clarifying performance expectations.
  • Identifying and resolving compliance issues to ensure all employees adhere to Buckland policies.
  • Plan and oversee the delivery of annual Corporate HR initiatives related to Performance Management, Talent Planning, Culture Change, Communications, Compensation and Rewards
  • Anticipate and plan for future human capital needs by interpreting workforce information and discussing top of mind issues and concerns with Buckland executive.
  • Leads in the creation of a departmental business strategy and objectives through the delivery of end-to-end HR solutions.
  • Provide leadership and guidance on HR policies, programs and processes including performance management and succession planning to ensure consistent application.
  • Identify developmental requirements and support the implementation of training & development solutions to build capabilities.
  • Ensure that communication flows effective across all locations.  Enhance corporate culture to foster engagement of all employees at all levels.
  • Partners with HR team member to manage complex workplace issues.                                                             
  • External relationships include business providers, consultants and industry network groups as appropriate.




The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Ability to occasionally drive to the St. Thomas, ON office
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or related field required, Master’s degree as asset.
  • At least five years of human resource management experience required.
  • Human Resources designation required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Microsoft Office experience
  • Clear understanding of employment legislation in US and Canada
  • Advanced knowledge of HR concepts, policies and practices acquired through formal academic training and/or relevant years of experience within HR areas of expertise.
  • Problem solving skills, ability to determine root cause of complex issues and arrive at sound HR business solutions.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and relationship building skills to work effectively with all employees at every level.
  • Ability and desire to occasionally travel within US, Canada
  • Valid Passport and ability and desire to occasionally travel to Mexico
