We produce 12 issues a year, in addition to several special edition publications, including HOME (for interior design + architecture), MINI (for young families), Healthy Life (for wellness) and Gordon Drive (an ultraluxury publication for high-net-worth seasonal residents).

Your Role 

As Gulfshore Life's managing editor, you'll work closely with our Editor in Chief to guide the direction of Southwest Florida's leading lifestyle publication. The ideal candidate will be an entrepreneurial, big-thinking editor with extensive experience producing lifestyle content, keeping teams on schedule and managing writers. You're proactive, organized, deadline-oriented and communicative. You'll work closely with editors to determine processes and deadlines, traffic editorial materials, finalize projects for shipping to the printer and help manage creative initiatives. You can identify issues and solve them before they turn into problems. As Managing Editor, you'll help develop and produce each publication. You'll regularly bring compelling ideas to the table that help shape Gulfshore Life's editorial direction. You have a sharp editorial judgment and take pride in knowing your coverage areas inside and out. You're the first to check out any new restaurant, have the best gallerists and artists on speed dial, and love getting out to explore all the trending and hidden gems of your hometown. 

What You'll Do 

  • Work hand-in-hand with the EIC and rest of the team to manage day-to-day operations and ensure deadlines are met 
  • Keep up with local lifestyle news and national trends to develop stories/lineups that are timely and engaging for our readers 
  • Pushing editorial materials through the production process—from ideation to publication
  • Assessing current workflows and making adjustments with efficiency in mind
  • Vet, assign and edit stories on food and wine, art, style, interior design and architecture, culture, and wellness 
  • Oversee production of some special editions 
  • Mentor and help grow current staffers and contributors 
  • Proofread stories and final layouts to ensure editorial and visual standards are upheld 
  • Collaborate in developing new sections, columns and entities for the brand 
  • Assist in staff hiring and personnel decisions

Desired Skills & Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree
  • Experience: 8+ years of post-grad experience in publishing or journalism (Experience with a national or regional magazine preferred)  
  • Proven experience overseeing content from ideation to creation (approving ideas, writing/editing, sourcing art) 
  • Excellent research, reporting, writing and editing abilities
  • Command of AP Style 
  • Strong leadership skills with exemplary attention to detail
  • Impeccable planning and organizational skills in a deadline-driven environment
  • Ability to balance daily deadlines with longer-lead stories 
  • Experience managing and developing writers 
  • Working familiarity with Google Suite (Calendar, Sheets and Docs) and Adobe Creative Cloud (especially) InCopy 
  • Must be proactive and excel in a fast-paced, multitasking environment, and be solution-oriented
