WINK News-Assistant News Director

WINK News is looking for an Assistant News Director with strong leadership skills, great news judgement and exceptional people skills.

Localism is our mantra. We care about what makes or will make news in Southwest Florida. Our Assistant News Director must lead with the strategic vision of excellence in breaking news and severe weather coverage, of course, but also encourage hard news enterprise and investigative journalism. WINK has a proven track record of exceptional coverage in all these areas. The number 2 leader of WINK News will help enhance, shape, and grow those attributes.

WINK News is always on, programming over 80 hours of local news in English and Spanish a week, as well as publishing the best digital news product in Southwest Florida. This news operation requires a proven leader who can nurture a positive culture that produces some of the strongest newscasts in the country. The Assistant News Director is involved in all aspects of the daily editorial news process, breaking news coverage and severe weather coverage. The right person will be integral in planning for severe weather and big story coverage and is someone who’s understands how to showcase big stories. We have more than 100 journalists in our newsroom so the right candidate must be able to inspire, lead and work with a dynamic team. Recruiting and developing young journalists is a critical component for this position.

  •  Emphasize excellence in spot news, severe weather, as well as, breaking stories.
  •  Encourage development of hard news enterprise and investigative journalism with local implications.
  •  Ensure inclusiveness, diversity and teambuilding.
  •  Develop and refine the technical and interpersonal skills of news managers.
  •  Prioritize continuous identification and recruiting of talented individuals to contribute to WINK News.
  •  Identify and recruit personnel to build upon the expansion of the Spanish language news team.
  •  Scope of responsibility includes all on-air and behind the camera positions.

Required Qualifications

  •  Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field (preferred).
  •  Previous local newsroom leadership experience of 5 years or more.
  •  Demonstrable record of sound journalistic judgment of accurate, fair and balanced coverage.
  •  Extensive experience in the best practices of newsgathering.
  •  Strong legal knowledge of sound newsgathering and pre-publication/broadcast legal review.
  •  Ability to work and meet stressful deadlines.
  •  Develop and execute strategic planning for broadcast, digital and social media.
  •  Experience in planning and execution of continuous coverage emergency programming on all platforms. Previous hurricane coverage is a plus.
  •  Typical work environment in a newsroom setting.
  •  The physical demands of the position require sitting, walking, standing and light weight lifting.
