Position Description

As an integral member of our solution delivery team, the Business Intelligence (BI) Specialist is responsible for the design, development, implementation, management and support of BI products and services. This includes applying thorough knowledge of the technical environment from data source connection through to visualization creation and insight delivery. The BI Specialist will primarily partner with a BI Architect to translate technical requirements into a seamless, efficient, and accurate BI solution. A specific focus for this role will be ‘data storytelling,’ or aligning the right set of visuals and content to ensure the information answers a question or describes a behavior to the right level for the client audience. The ideal candidate would have a technical focus on BI tools and processes balanced with a collaborative approach to gather feedback and ensure a solution is relevant for audiences with both technical and non-technical backgrounds.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work directly with internal teams (BI Architects, Practice Director, Client Directors) to develop and deliver BI products and services. Responsibilities include:
  • Design the most efficient, accurate, and scalable BI solution that allows for clear and insightful description of the relevant business outcome or behavior.
  • Translate technical requirements into BI process, from data gathering to insight development.
  • Serve as primary technical specialist on the delivery team, interacting with both technical and non-technical teams to assemble relevant information.
  • Proactively identify opportunity to improve an existing BI process, communicating these opportunities to internal teams as well as client teams where relevant.
  • Ensure ongoing performance and maintenance of BI solutions, implementing requested changes and suggesting optimal approaches where necessary.
  • Provide technical assistance and cross training to other team members
  • Must be able to perform duties with moderate to low supervision

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of at least one (ideally multiple) BI product such as Tableau, Power BI, Domo, or Excel.
  • Excellent ability to design a dashboard structure with the right visuals and tables that provide the best insight for the business question.
  • Thorough knowledge of data quality issue identification and management. Must be able to proactively identify key data issues that impact the overall quality of resulting insight.
  • Ability to decipher technical requirements into a BI process, ask the right questions to clarify where requirements are not clear.
  • Ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical audiences, describing a BI solution from end to end.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be deadline-oriented with an ability to develop multiple solutions for a single assignment.
  • Proficient in Word, with a working knowledge of PowerPoint. Thorough knowledge of Excel.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with cross-functional partners.
  • Curiosity about data and the stories that can be created, with an eye for accuracy and common sense outcomes.

 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems/Management, BI, Analytics, Data Science, Economics, or similar.
  • 5+ years’ hands-on experience with one or more BI tools (Power BI, Excel, Tableau, Domo, etc.)
  • 3+ years’ in consultative role (either with a consulting firm or serving as internal consultant to various business groups) that required understanding a business problem ahead of designing or re-designing a solution.
  • Ability to communicate requirements to non-technical audiences, ask clarifying questions to clearly define requirements.
  • Ability to think creatively and brainstorm solutions that match the level of complexity and constraints that are always prevalent in data gathering, transferring, and visualizing.
  • A portfolio or previous work, demonstrating storytelling with data.
