Director of Information Technology (IT) Portfolio Management

The role is based in Carmel, Indiana and reports to the CIO – VP of Global IT.

The Director of Information Technology (IT) Portfolio Management is responsible for establishing, implementing and maintaining an enterprise IT Portfolio Management program to ensure that IT Projects and Programs are planned for according to business unit demands and priority, and delivered. The Director of IT Portfolio Management will provide the vision and leadership necessary to plan and execute strategic programs and tactical projects.

 This position requires a visionary leader with sound knowledge of IT project / portfolio management practices and business management practices.

 They will proactively work with business units and corporate functions to plan prioritize and implement IT projects that meet prioritized business objectives.  She or he will also drive the prioritization process for IT investment across the enterprise.

 Must be knowledgeable about the business environment and ensure that information systems are developed and maintained in a fully functional, integrated and secure mode.

 The ideal candidate is a thought leader, a consensus builder, and an integrator of people and processes. While the Director of IT Portfolio Management is the leader of the IT Portfolio, she or he must also be able to coordinate disparate drivers, constraints and personalities, while maintaining objectivity and a strong understanding that portfolio management is just one of the business's activities.

Job Overview

At BraunAbility, the Director of IT Portfolio Management:

  • Supports organizational and IT leadership in overseeing, managing and using the entire life cycle of investments and initiatives to achieve the organization’s goals and objectives
  • Acts as the primary resource for the IT investment council, project steering committees and project sponsors for communications, and for reporting the state and performance of initiatives within the portfolio
  • Provides and escalates data on achieving an optimized mix among project investments, making the best possible use of all resources and delivering the maximum value and benefits from projects and programs within the portfolio
  • Identifies, prioritizes and coordinates project and program resources engaged with all or many of the initiatives within the project portfolio
  • Delivers the agreed upon IT Portfolio

 Primary Responsibilities and Activities

  • Ensure adherence to the appropriate governance functions (IT Councils) relating to the portfolio. Do so on behalf of the IT portfolio investment council and steering committees, and in accordance with the organization’s guidelines, policies and practices.
  • Facilitate and coordinate the efforts of the CIO and senior leadership toward the establishment of the project portfolio, its structure and processes. This includes:
    • Demand management and strategic alignment of projects and programs
    • Portfolio categories and criteria
    • Evaluation, selection and prioritization
    • Backlog and Release Management
    • Execution, tracking and measuring the achieved results
  • Conduct reviews monthly with senior business and IT executives, stakeholder committees, the steering committee and other relevant bodies. Do so to validate and assess the project portfolio, execute change and reprioritize as necessary to meet business needs.
  • Conduct regular meetings with functional senior executive bodies. Inform them of any issues with the performance of individual projects within the portfolio. Confirm that the use of resources and funding is on plan, and highlight any variances.
  • Lead reviews of any significant initiatives, projects or programs that have run into challenges. Provide recommendations as to whether they should be continued, changed significantly, placed on hold or discontinued.
  • Partner with business functions to create IT Roadmaps, and associated business cases, to drive short and long-term IT investment
  • Provide criteria for prioritization at the appropriate level aligned to the goals of the IT investment council and steering committee. Become the point of escalation and arbitration if necessary.
  • Collaborate with senior business and IT executives to identify opportunities for applying technology developments to address the challenges from increasing digitalization.
  • Oversee and coordinate dependencies across the initiatives in the portfolio, and resolve or escalate conflicts.
  • Ensure and balance the availability of the required skills and competencies across project and program teams within the project portfolio, as mandated and resourced by leadership.
  • Direct the development and maintenance of communications and reporting about the project portfolios, their contents and the performance of individual initiatives to stakeholder and governance council(s), the steering committee and senior executives.
  • Direct the creation and maintenance of the required portfolio documentation and artifacts.
  • Delivers the agreed upon IT Portfolio via programs and projects

 Required Education

 Bachelor’s Degree required.

 Required Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in Project Management, including IT projects and IT Infrastructure.
  • Employment history must demonstrate increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Experience in managing a team and multiple concurrent projects.

 Preferred Experience

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification.
  • Agile Project Management experience.
  • Jira software knowledge.
  • Experience with the Salesforce ecosystem of solutions.

 Knowledge and Skills

  • Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to develop and communicate the portfolio objectives, inspire and motivate staff, and maintain alignment with business strategy.
  • A high degree of political sensitivity, astuteness and the ability to use influence to overcome obstacles and achieve portfolio success.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain and “sell” the portfolio goals and objectives to the business and to technical leadership.
  • Strong business acumen
  • A high level of empathy and the ability to vary styles of interaction to match the needs of a variety of business and technical audiences, as well as temperaments and personalities.
  • Influencing and negotiation experience and skills in an environment with high competition for resources.
  • Excellent analytical, conceptual strategic planning and execution skills. Familiarity with financial analysis and associated reporting tools.
  • Ability to develop portfolios and deliver them against financial and resource constraints.
  • Familiarity with the use of reporting tools to monitor portfolio activities and analyze portfolio performance.
  • Experience with the delivery methodologies and frameworks of:
    • PMI standards (PMP Certification)
    • Agile / Scrum (CSM Certification)
  • Experience across a range of projects and programs.
  • Understanding of current and emerging technologies and how organizations may apply them to drive digital business.
