Summary The Vice President of Logistics and Transportation is responsible for $80M in logistics business including the oversight of 10 distribution locations and a transportation network consisting of a small customized internal fleet and a reliance on 3rd party carrier relationships. This individual will also be expected to optimize Blount’s transportation networks for cost-effectiveness and efficiency, manage the negotiation and procurement of annual equipment purchase and/or lease programs, develop and implement innovative technology solutions to better manage driver operations, safety, and improve service levels to our internal and external customers, develop and manage partnerships with third party logistics organizations, and define and articulate operational vision to set focus and work priorities for Transportation and Logistics Operations.
  • The Vice President of Logistics and Transportation will be expected to contribute to the overall growth and profitability of the company by closely collaborating with all members of the extended management team, and by actively promoting and building cross-functional partnerships with other departments.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for transportation and logistics operations aligned with overall business goals.
  • Develop a network wide optimization program to improve service levels, reduce costs, and improve efficiencies.
  • Lead and manage teams responsible for transportation and logistics operations. Recruit, train, and develop staff in both areas including the development of a potential future successor.
  • Lead through data and analytics. Develop key performance indicators (KPIs) for both transportation and logistics operations.
  • Evaluate and implement technological solutions to improve service levels, reduce costs and improve efficiencies.
  • Manage Logistics’ P&L statement of $80m annual spend. Identify opportunities to optimize spending and generate value creation ideas.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance processes and overall efficiency of the logistics function. Promote a culture of innovation and efficiency within the transportation and logistics teams.
  • Stay up to date on industry trends and emerging technologies, identifying opportunities to leverage automation, digitalization, and analytics to drive process efficiencies and enhance overall logistics capabilities.
  • Determine future space requirements and position of finished and raw goods inventories at all warehouses.
  • Standardize procedures to improve efficiency of systems and staff throughout the network.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate demand forecasting, inventory planning, replenishment to minimize stock outs. Ensure sound inventory management, product movement reconciliation, and control processes to maximize inventory accuracy (quantity and value) to meet client expectations.
  • Oversee all logistic vendor/service providers to ensure high quality of service to internal and external customers.
  • Negotiate and implement logistics vendor agreements providing advantageous financial terms and the lowest total cost while also supporting quality operational performance.
  • Establish vendor KPI’s and quarterly performance reviews to effectively evaluate and manage partnerships.
  • Ensure all logistics policies, procedures and operations are compliant with all applicable laws and statutory regulations.
Education and/or Experience 
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, supply chain management, logistics, operations management, or related field
  • 5+ years of progressive Logistics experience. 
  • Advanced knowledge of logistics principles, theories, and processes.
  • Must have strong negotiation skills and the ability to mediate situations among suppliers, employees, and others.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to lead, influence and motivate others.
  • Cross-functional business team environment experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
