BioMarin’s Technical Operations group is responsible for creating our drugs for use in clinical trials and for scaling production of those drugs for the commercial market. The Analytical Chemistry department, a part of Process Sciences within Tech Ops, supports all assay needs in Tech Ops. Our scientists and associates are experts in analytics of small molecules, peptides, complex glycosylated enzymes, PEGylated proteins and gene therapy agents. We develop assays to follow the quality attributes of our products, support IND and BLA applications, we assess the capability of our processes by analyzing in-process samples all the way from bioreactors through purification steps to the drug substance and build release assays for transfer to Quality. The Analytical Chemistry department at BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. is seeking a Molecular and Cellular Virologist/Biologist at the Scientist 1 level with adenovirus associated virus (AAV) vector analytical/assay development expertise to join a team focused on supporting gene therapy efforts to address genetic disorders. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated critical thinker, with a proven ability to work in
a multi-disciplinary and collaborative environment. The candidate will develop and utilize a wide variety of analytical methods and assays for the characterization of gene therapy agents in our pipeline. An ideal candidate would be well-versed in analytics for viruses and viral vectors as appropriate for development of gene therapy products and processes. Experience in a drug development environment is a big plus.
Execution of relevant experiments to support development of qualitative and quantitative assays for gene therapy process development as well as product characterization.
Primarily support development of biochemical and molecular methods to analyze viral DNA, RNA, protein, and infectivity, vector genome titers, capsid composition, vector potency, transduction, etc.
Conduct experiments to support vector characterization, safety studies, comparability studies, and stability studies in a timely fashion.
Routinely share experimental data with project teams and write protocols and reports.
Train colleagues and associates when needed.
Serve as a resource in virology, vector biology, and AAV to colleagues in the Development organization within the company.
Expert in molecular and cellular virology and vector biology

Molecular biology methods
Ph.D. in virology, biological sciences, or biochemistry and 2 years of post-doctoral or industry experience is preferred.
Operation of standard PCR, ddPCR, qPCR, flow cytometry, DNA sequencing, microscopy desired.
Will report to the Principal Scientist managing AAV/Immunochemistry group within Analytical Chemistry.
No immediate supervisory role.
