Position Summary
The Financial Analyst, Budgeting & Reporting is a key member of the Finance team responsible for supporting Bethany’s budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, external audit processes, and financial systems. As an individual contributor, this role delivers accurate, timely, and insightful financial information to internal and external stakeholders and ensures compliance with regulatory, audit, and funding partner requirements.
The position requires strong analytical ability, technical financial expertise, and a continuous improvement mindset. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, collaborative, and comfortable working with complex financial data across multiple entities.
Key Responsibilities
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Support the full annual budgeting cycle for legal entities.
- Deliver accurate forecasts informed by collaboration with budget owners and analysis of operational drivers and variances.
- Compile and review budget submissions to ensure accuracy, consistency, and alignment with financial guidelines.
- Analyze trends, variances, and performance indicators to support financial planning and decision-making.
External Audit Support
- Prepare schedules, reconciliations, working papers, and supporting documentation for external audits.
- Respond to auditor inquiries and ensure the completeness and accuracy of data provided.
- Maintain organized audit files and ensure year-end reporting deadlines are met.
Monthly & Quarterly Financial Reporting
- Prepare periodic financial and operating reports, including:
- Budget variance reports.
- AHS-required Firms Accountability reports.
- Support monthly management reporting and quarterly Board reporting packages and analysis.
- Debt covenant reports.
- Perform variance analysis and provide meaningful insights to management and program leaders.
Annual External Financial Reporting
- Prepare annual filings, including:
- Charty Information Returns (T3010s).
- All required grant reporting packages.
- Annual debt covenant reporting.
- Ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with regulatory and funding partner expectations.
Analysis and Reporting (Structured & Ad-Hoc)
- Build and maintain financial and statistical system reports to support operational and strategic decision-making.
- Prepare comprehensive supporting analyses and calculations for journal entries, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and alignment with financial reporting standards.
- Develop financial models, scenario analyses, and cost/benefit analyses as needed.
- Assist in preparing financial information for business cases, proposals, and MD&A inputs.
- Support internal stakeholders with ad-hoc analysis requests.
Systems, Data Integrity & Process Improvement
- Maintain financial and statistical information systems to ensure the accuracy and reliability of captured data.
- Identify opportunities to streamline budgeting, reporting, and forecasting processes.
- Support automation initiatives and enhance system reports using ERP tools and reporting platforms.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of finance policies, procedures, and internal controls.
What You Bring
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field is required.
- CPA designation or Master of Business Administration (MBA) is considered an asset.
Experience
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in financial reporting, budgeting, accounting, or financial analysis.
- Experience in not-for-profit or multi-entity environments is an asset.
- Experience preparing audit schedules, financial reports, and variance analysis.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO).
- High proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, text functions, Power Query, advanced analysis functions).
- Experience with Workday and Yardi systems is considered an asset.
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI) is an asset.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to interpret complex data with accuracy.
