The director of Facilities provides administrative direction and oversight of the daily operations of the Maintenance and Custodial departments at Brooklyn Botanic Garden. This includes responsibility for day-to-day custodial and maintenance functions, small and medium-scale renovations, and the maintenance and replacement of physical assets and related systems at the Garden.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage a staff of 26 full-time employees and up to 10 part-time seasonal employees, including hiring, work assignments, evaluation, payroll approval, and training.
  • Direct the care, maintenance, and repair of all facilities to ensure that the Garden's property and physical plant are maintained in a clean, operationally sound, welcoming, and aesthetically pleasing manner.
  • Direct the development and implementation of plans, policies, and procedures for the construction, renovation, operation (including custodial), maintenance, preventative maintenance, and repair of the Garden’s buildings, systems, grounds, equipment, and related technologies to ensure welcoming, high-quality environments for visitors and employees.
  • Develop and recommend policies and guidelines to protect, enhance, and preserve the Garden’s physical assets and resources, including furniture and equipment, space usage, maintenance, and energy management.
  • Act as liaison between the Garden and consultants, engineers, contractors, utility providers, and applicable city entities (e.g., FDNY).
  • Assure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to facilities and operations, including safety data sheets and required reports regarding hazardous materials oversight, workers’ right to know, ADA, OSHA, etc.
  • Manage a purchasing and inventory control program as well as cost estimates and annual maintenance contracts.
  • Optimize staffing decisions to improve productivity and develop, recommend, and allocate staff resources appropriately.
  • Ensure compliance with Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
  • Manage budgets within assigned cost centers to ensure the most efficient use of the Garden’s resources.
  • Manage the purchase of energy/fuels and utilities and administer the Garden's energy management and energy conservation programs.
  • Collaborate with appropriate stakeholders on capital projects.
  • Respond promptly to facility and operational emergencies.
  • Oversee the setup and teardown of tents, power supply, tables, etc., at BBG events and festivals.
  • Communicate effectively and diplomatically in verbal and written form to explain policies and procedures to BBG staff and others.
  • Lead and motivate multifunctional teams; manage multiple conflicting priorities; and build relationships and partnerships across the institution.
  • Work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy, productivity, and exercise independent judgment effectively in decision-making processes..
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


  • At least seven years’ experience as a facilities manager
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong supervisory skills
  • Ability to work well with Garden staff, volunteers, and visitors
  • Demonstrated ability to find creative solutions to problems, analyze situations, and implement action plans in a timely manner
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent technical and writing skills and ability to communicate with clarity, confidence, and tact
  • Fluent in use of technology
  • Preferred: master’s or other advanced degree
  • Preferred: management experience in similar large cultural institutions or in higher education or health-care facilities
  • Experience working in union environments highly preferred
