Azure Cloud Platform- Database Migration SME

IT Modernization Washington, Washington

Description

AVER is a fast-growing SDVOSB that has achieved significant revenue growth over the past 5 plus years with much of our work focused on Data Analytics, Mission Support, IT Modernization and Biometrics. AVER is seeking a Azure Cloud Platform Database Migration SME to support a high-impact modernization effort for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This role is cloud-first and platform-focused, centered on Azure infrastructure, Kubernetes (AKS), and SRE-style operations. The engineer will play a key role in Oracle-to-Azure GovCloud migration efforts while owning the day-to-day operations of a third-party DBaaS control plane deployed in Azure. This position spans control plane and data plane responsibilities, with a strong emphasis on platform reliability, cloud-native operations, and end-to-end troubleshooting. Oracle experience is required only to support migration validation, platform health, and issue triage—not full database administration. Join a collaborative team who values AVER’s mission, focus, and culture of delivering exceptional client service with great people and transformative technology solutions that ensure Government mission success.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Own day-to-day operations of a third-party DBaaS control plane deployed in Azure GovCloud

  • Operate core Azure infrastructure components: VNets, subnets, NSGs, load balancers, storage accounts, and managed identities
  • Perform hands-on Kubernetes administration (pods, services, scaling, configuration, observability)
  • Administer Linux environments (RHEL/Oracle Linux), including system hardening, patching, and performance tuning
  • Execute OS patching for database VMs in alignment with maintenance windows and federal change management processes
  • Act as an SRE escalation point, troubleshooting issues across control plane, platform services, and data plane
  • Support Oracle database operations at a platform level (startup/shutdown, health checks, basic troubleshooting)
  • Partner with DHS security and infrastructure teams to ensure compliance with federal standards (FedRAMP, FISMA, NIST)
  • Lead root cause analysis and produce clear, customer-facing postmortems
  • Drive continuous improvement in platform reliability, observability, and operational efficiency
Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years or 15+ years of hands-on Cloud, DevOps, Oracle DBA and/or platform cloud engineering experience in lieu of a degree

  • 5+ years of expertise in Azure services, including AKS, networking, IAM (RBAC, Managed Identities), and monitoring
  • Hands-on Kubernetes experience (AKS preferred): cluster operations, upgrades, logging, and troubleshooting
  • Advanced Linux administration skills (RHEL or Oracle Linux), including patching and performance tuning
  • Experience with SRE practices and troubleshooting distributed systems across multiple layers
  • Understanding of Azure network security (private endpoints, firewalls, segmentation)
  • Experience with storage systems (Azure Disks, Files, Blob) and performance troubleshooting
  • Working knowledge of Oracle database architecture to support migration and platform-level troubleshooting
  • Experience with working along Oracle DBA’s and knowledge of Oracle database concepts to support platform operations, including awareness of backup/recovery (RMAN), HA/DR (Data Guard/Goldengate), and patching processes within OEM
  • Experience supporting systems under federal or another highly regulated compliance frameworks (ex: FedRAMP, FISMA, NIST 800-53)
  • Strong documentation and communication skills for customer-facing environments
Desired Requirements:
  • Experience operating DBaaS platforms or hosted control planes in Azure
  • Familiarity with Oracle Exadata, RAC
  • Experience migrating Oracle databases to Azure (including newer versions such as 19c to 23c)
