Communications Specialist
Description

AVER is seeking a Communications Specialist to originate and prepare written material, such as scripts, stories, advertisements, and other material. This role provides direct support to the Chief of Staff and Executive Secretariat team. Responsibilities Include:
- Design and layout newsletters using Microsoft Publisher
- Create and design digital newsletters that can be embedded in emails, this includes annual reports in Publisher and digital annual reports
- Prepare information for an intranet SharePoint site and posting documents
- Collect information for, and prepare, design, and lay out fact sheets
- Prepare talking points for top-level officials for speaking engagements
- Collect information for and prepare PowerPoint slides for presentations
- Prepare and lay out brochures, preferably both paper and digital versions
Education Requirements:
- Bachelors Degree in a related field required
Experience Requirements:
- Knowledge of federal Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (Accessibility) and experience preparing documents in many different formats that meet the requirements under Section 508 to ensure equal access for all members of the public and federal employees with disabilities
- Experience in a newsroom or government public affairs office interviewing people and preparing and editing stories and/or news releases that don’t include any factual, spelling, grammatical, or Associated Press style errors and that are very easy to read and understand
- Experience with Microsoft Publisher
- Ability to remain flexible and open to learning
- Ability to work well with DHS stakeholders
Desired Requirements:
- Experience using the DHS Correspondence Analyst Task Tracker (CATT) system
- Willingness to accept and follow branding guidelines pertaining to approved logo usage, color palette, typography and imagery usages, and placement of department signatures
Location:
- HYBRID (1 day a week on site in Springfield, VA)
Security Requirements:
- Ability to obtain and maintain a government clearance (Public Trust)
- This role supports a government agency which requires U.S. citizenship
