Data Engineer (R4143)

The Global Analytics and Insights team is looking for a Data Engineer to help build Avalara's Data Platform. This role will be a key contributor building data flows, implementing data warehousing concepts, and creating visualizations to empower end users. This candidate must possess strong SQL skills and an innate ability to understand data and how it can provide insights to an organization. The ideal candidate has experience with a number of data-centric technologies to solve a wide array of data-related challenges.

Responsibilities :

  • Build realtime and batch data integrations to Data Platform
  • Build and maintain scalable ELT/ETL processes
  • Design processes to cleanse and transform raw data into structured format
  • Provide production support for data integration and transformation pipelines
  • Innovate solutions to a variety of data intensive tasks - using the right technology for the right problems at the right time
  • Scale and tune data pipelines, databases and SQL queries
  • Create data visualizations for data consumers
  • Practice/Implement data security, encryption and masking policies across various data sets and data sources
  • Work with business and engineering teams to identify scope, constraints, dependencies, and risks
  • Identify risks and opportunities across the business and drive solutions


  • 5+ years experience in data engineering field
  • 2+ years experience with data pipelines (ETL / ELT)
  • 2+ years experience with Python
  • 2+ years experience with cloud technologies (AWS and Snowflake a plus)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or relevant work experience
  • Advanced SQL proficiency
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Data Lifecycle
  • Experience with Data Visualization tools (Tableau and Power BI a plus)
  • Demonstrated experience with Source Control, CI / CD, and DevOps
  • Working knowledge of Agile frameworks and Jira
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders across multiple business units
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
